The Line: Mississippi State Bulldogs -29 -- Over/Under: 55.5
The Mississippi State Bulldogs and the Southern Miss Golden Eagles face off on Saturday as they kick off their 2014 college football seasons.
The expectations always seem to be high for the Mississippi State Bulldogs but Dan Mullen’s team seems to come up short each year. While MSU goes bowling on a regular basis, the hope was this team would be competing for a SEC crown. Dak Prescott returns at QB and while he can run I still see a question mark that he can pass with any kind of consistency. Josh Robinson takes over the running back spot but that has been another position that has been deep in talent over the years but has suffered because of the subpar passing game. Jameon Lewis and Robert Johnson are returning starters and seniors at WR and maybe they can help with what I see as a poor passing game. Only two starters return on the Mississippi State offensive line. Leading tackler Bernardrick McKinney returns at LB and the secondary looks to be strong as most of the corners saw action last season and Taveze Calhoun and Jamerson Love are the starters. Mississippi State had trouble rushing the passer last season but hey return a ton of experience including starters Preston Smith and P.J. Jones. Mullen arrived at Mississippi State with a lot of fanfare but he hasn’t exactly lived up to the hype.
The Southern Miss Golden Eagles were absolutely horrible last season getting blown out on a regular basis before finally getting a win in the final game of the season against UAB. In fact Southern Miss had lost 23 games in a row up until the win over UAB after experiencing several years of top level success. Nick Mullens is back at QB after starting about half of last season as a freshman. The running attack was dreadful last year and Jalen Richard and George Payne both hope to improve this year. Markese Triplett and Tyre’oune Holmes are back at WR but like the rest of the USM team, they haven’t gotten it done. The Southern Miss defense was also horrible last season allowing the opposition to score in the 50’s and 60’s on a regular basis. Seven starters return but the Golden Eagles are hoping the return of injured players Alan Howze and Rakeem Nunez-Noches can help them improve. The wheels appear to have fallen off of the cart at Southern Miss.
Mississippi State is 5-0 against the spread in their last five games, 14-6 against the spread in their last 20 home games, and 0-7 against the spread in August. Southern Miss is 3-7 against the spread against the SEC, 2-8 against the spread in their last 10 road games, and 1-4 against the spread in their last five non-conference games.
The total is this one is set at 56 but I like the over even though it is early in the year and it sometimes takes a week for offenses to get it together. I also have a strong pick on who will cover the point spread and I will post that in the Premium Area as well as on the App.
