The Mississippi State Bulldogs and the UAB Blazers face off on Saturday in a college football battle of week one winners.
The Mississippi State Bulldogs were impressive blowing out Southern Miss in week one at home. The MSU Offense was unstoppable once they got rolling racking up 550 yards and scoring 49 points. Dak Prescott left some room for improvement but he threw for 284 yards and four touchdowns. Josh Robinson led the Bulldogs rushing attack with 87 yards and Nick Griffin rushed for 45 yards and a touchdown. De’Runnya Wilson caught four passes with two going for touchdowns and Fred Ross had three catches with two finding the endzone. The Mississippi State defense was bringing the heat allowing 283 points and not allowing Southern Miss to get on the scoreboard. Kendrick Market and Christian Holmes each had six tackles and Beniquez Brown had five tackles. The expectations are high for Dan Mullen’s team this year and in week one they didn’t fall short.
Most agreed that the UAB Blazers would be improved this season but I am not sure many were ready for them to come out and blow out Troy by 38 points in week one. UAB’s offense racked up 490 yards and 48 points and had their way with the Troy defense. Blazers QB Cody Clements didn’t need to do much but manage the game throwing for 152 yards and two touchdowns and rushing for 37 yards and a touchdown. Jordan Howard had a huge day carrying the football for UAB gaining 179 yards and scoring two touchdowns and D.J. Vinsin rushed for 106 yards and a touchdown while Kennar Backman had four catches and two touchdowns. The UAB defense allowed just 272 yards and 10 points as they were fired up in week one. Jake Ganus had seven tackles, Diahee Watkins had six tackles including two sacks, and Kalen Jackson had five tackles and a fumble recovery. The competition gets much tougher this week for UAB and we will get a better idea as to exactly where they stand in the CFB landscape.
Mississippi State looked sharp in their opener but this looks like a lot of points and I am going to take them with the Blazers.
