The Southern Miss Golden Eagles and the Mississippi State Bulldogs meet in an in-state college football matchup from Davis Wade Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The Southern Miss Golden Eagles will look for a marquee road win to build on their 38-10 season-opening victory over Alcorn State last time out. Jack Abraham threw for 293 yards, a touchdown and an interception on 18 of 28 passing while also adding a rushing touchdown. Dee Baker added a team-high 35 rushing yards while Jordan Mitchell had a team-high 7 catches for 133 yards while Tim Jones had 5 receptions for 68 yards and Neil McLaurin had a touchdown grab. Jaylond Adams was a special teams stud in the win, recording an 89-yard kick return TD and an 80-yard punt return TD. Defensively, Southern Miss combined for 5 sacks including a pair from Terry Whittington while D.Q. Thomas had an interception and Eriq Kitchen had a fumble recovery. Ky’el Hendry had a team-high 6 tackles.
The Mississippi State Bulldogs will look to build on a season opening 38-28 win at Louisiana in their last outing. Tommy Stevens threw for 236 yards and 2 touchdowns on 20 of 30 passing while also rushing for 37 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Kylin Hill rushed for a team-leading 197 yards and a touchdown on 27 carries while Nick Gibson added a rushing score and 27 rushing yards. Osirus Mitchell had a team-high 6 receptions for 88 yards and a touchdown while Austin Williams had 43 receiving yards and a TD and Stepehn Guidry had 4 receptions for 36 yards. Defensively, Cameron Dantzler had an interception and a fumble recovery while Maurice Smitherman had an interception and Brian Cole II had a fumble recovery of his own. Erroll Thompson led the Bulldogs with 9 tackles as well in the win.
Southern Miss is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall and 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games against the SEC while the under is 8-2-1 in their last 11 non-conference games. Mississippi State is 8-3 ATS in their last 11 non-conference games and 4-0 ATS in their last 4 home games while the under is 5-1 in their last 6 games following a win.
I think a case could be made for either side, as Southern Miss beat down on Alcorn State and has a history of keeping up ATS with the big guns of the SEC combined with Mississippi State allowing Louisiana to hang around. However, Mississippi State is the more experienced of the two sides here, and even though they haven’t played since 2015, the Bulldogs have won the last two meetings against Southern Miss by a combined 67 points. In-state rivalry games can be tricky, and Southern Miss may get themselves up for this one, but ultimately, I just see Mississippi State being too much for Southern Miss, so I’ll lay the points with the Bulldogs here.
