The Line: Missouri Tigers -9 -- Over/Under:
The Missouri Tigers and the Central Florida Knights face off on Saturday in college football action.
The Missouri Tigers are off to a 2-0 start this season as Gary Pinkel’s team is back at home after going on the road in week two. While many though Mizzou was walking into a trap in week two, the Tigers once again looked like a team that might surprise some people this season. Missouri QB Maty Mauk is just getting better already throwing for eight touchdowns and his completion percentage is rising as he’s over 64 percent. Mauk has been aided by a sound ground attack led by Russell Hansbrough and his 5.5 yards per carry average. Jimmy Hunt has taken over as the primary target at WR but Darius White leads Missouri with three receiving touchdowns. Missouri’s defense has racked up six sacks over the first two games and has created five turnovers. Michael Scherer leads the Tigers defense with 18 tackles, Shane Ray has three sacks, and Aaron Penton has two interceptions as it has been a team effort across the board. Missouri might once again be flying under the radar in the SEC but as we saw last season that doesn’t seem to affect them.
The UCF Knights opened their season in Ireland against Penn State and lost a tight one but after a week off George O’Leary’s team is ready to take a shot at another big conference team. While Central Florida plays in the AAC, they have the physical makeup of any team in any of the other conferences. Justin Holman has big shoes to fill under center for the departed Blake Bortles but UCF didn’t have a passing touchdown in their opener. Dontravious Wilson has taken over in the Central Florida backfield getting all of the carries in week one. J.J. Worton was the primary receiving target in week one and Breshad Perriman averaged 27 yards per catch. The UCF defense created three turnovers and had two sacks in their opener in what was a physical game. Thomas Niles and Jaryl Mamea each had sacks and Jacoby Glenn had 11 tackles and an interception. Central Florida plays in the image of their Head Coach and they seem to always have a chip on their shoulder.
Missouri is 5-1-1 against the spread in their last seven non-conference games, 6-2-1 against the spread in their last nine home games, and 15-5-1 against the spread in their last 21 games overall. Central Florida is 6-1 against the spread against a team with a winning record, 14-6 against the spread following a loss, and 2-5 against the spread in their last seven games.
UCF likes playing the big boys and I don’t expect them to back down here. This should be a good one for those who like running the football and defense but those games are usually close and the line here is just too big to pass on taking the points.
