The Line: San Diego State Aztecs -2.5 -- Over/Under: 55.5
The San Diego State Aztecs battle the Navy Midshipmen in the Poinsettia Bowl at Qualcomm Stadium.
The Navy Midshipmen come in to the Poinsettia Bowl as winners in three straight and five of six following a 17-10 victory against rival Army. This season had DD in victories written all over it but the Middies finished just 7-5 and seemed to be flat far too often. The Midshipmen outscored the opposition 33-28 although their defense gave up 410 yards with 200 yards coming on the ground. The offense ran the ball effectively with the option with 345 rushing yards being second nationally with quarterback Keenan Reynolds the star of this group. Reynolds completed 47% of his throws for 826 yards but it was on the ground where he was most dangerous. Reynolds carried the ball 231 times for 1,182 yards and 21 touchdowns while Noah Copeland and and Chris Swain added 889 yards and 621 yards. Jamir Tillman was the only receiver of note with 20 catches for 386 yards and over 19 yards per catch.
The defense first San Diego State Aztecs needed a strong finish to reach the postseason and they came through with wins in three of their last four to go 7-5. The #21 defense allowed only 339 yards with a top 20 passing D and top 50 run D with a mere 20 points given up. The offense averaged 400 yards and 26 points with a run heavy attack that approached 220 yards. Quarterback Quinn Kaehler connected on 56% of his throws for 2,016 yards with nine touchdowns and ten interceptions. Eric Judge, Ezell Ruffin and LLoyd Mills were receivers of equal quality with a combined 71 receptions for almost 1,200 yards. The strength of this offense was giving the ball to Donnel Pumphrey and watch him run which was a great strategy totaling 1,761 yards on 256 totes. When Pumphrey wasn't getting the ball Chase Price was with 605 yards on 130 touches.
Under is 4-0 in Midshipmen last 4 games on grass and is 4-0 in Midshipmen last 4 neutral site games while going 9-1 in Midshipmen last 10 games in December. For San Diego State the under is 6-0 in Aztecs last 6 vs. INDEP and is 5-0 in Aztecs last 5 games after allowing less than 20 points in their previous game while going 4-0 in Aztecs last 4 games after accumulating more than 200 yards rushing in their previous game. San Diego State has a great defense and has had success against the option. I hope the Middies win but I'm thinking Aztecs...
