CFB | East Carolina Pirates (3-8) at NC State Wolfpack (8-3)
Rob Kinnan-USA TODAY Sports

The East Carolina Pirates and the NC State Wolfpack face off on Saturday in college football action.

East Carolina enters this one at 3-8 on the season. The Pirates started out the year at 2-2, but since have won just one game, a 55-21 victory over UConn back on November 17.

In East Carolina’s last game versus Cincinnati, they were blown out by the Bearcats 56-6. In that loss, Pirates QB Holton Ahlters put up 184 yards, a TD and a pick, while Trace Christian led the rush with 25 yards on six carries. Mydreon Vines had East Carolina’s lone TD with a 71-yard reception—his only catch of the day.

Over on the NC State side, they’re sitting at 8-3 this year. The Wolfpack rolled into the season at 5-0, but then dropped three of four games versus Clemson, Syracuse and Wake Forest. NC State has won their last pair versus Louisville and UNC, though.

In the Tar Heels game, NC State QB Ryan Finley put up 200 yards and a pick, and Reggie Gallaspy had a stellar day on 129 yards and five rushing TDs. Jakobi Meyers led the Wolfpack receivers with 111 yards on seven grabs.

The Pirates are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 versus the ACC and 16-39-1 ATS in their last 56 overall. East Carolina is also 7-19 ATS in their last 26 road games and 14-40 ATS versus a team with a winning record.

Meanwhile, the Wolfpack are 7-2-1 ATS in their last nine in December and 2-5 ATS in their last seven overall. NC State is 1-4 ATS in their last five on grass and 0-4 ATS in their last four following a straight-up win.

It goes without saying that East Carolina’s season has been a big disappointment, even by the most lax of standards. The Pirates have put up a few solid offensive performances this year, but in their last pair of defeats they’ve logged only 24 points.

As for the Wolfpack, they’re 3-1 in their last four but have also had a couple of real dud games, falling by four to Wake Forest and needing OT to squeak by a bad Tar Heels team—rivalry road game or not.

That said, the stage is set here for a massive victory for the Wolfpack, so I’m likely going with them on the cover.
