Akron Zips (0-0) at Nebraska Cornhuskers (0-0)
|Date & Time||Saturday September 1, 2018, 8:00 PM (EDT)|
The Line: Nebraska Cornhuskers -24 -- Over/Under: 53
The Akron Zips and Nebraska Cornhuskers meet Saturday in college football action at Memorial Stadium.
The Akron Zips are coming off a seven-win season and a rare bowl appearance, so there should be more optimism with this program than in the past. Quarterback Kato Nelson returns after a surprising freshman year that included eight touchdown passes and almost 200 rushing yards in limited playing time. Van Edwards Jr. should have his best season at running back and getting a healthy Mykel Traylor-Bennett at wide receiver would do wonders. Akron has a chance to be a pretty good offensive club as long as Nelson can build on what he showed last year just 140 pass attempts. Defensively, Akron could be one of the best in the MAC with players such as Ulysees Gilbert, Jamal Davis, Kyron Brown and Alvin Davis back on the force. Akron has quality players at all three phases of the defense and will make a case as a top-25 defense in the country. The Akron Zips have lost six of their last eight regular season openers.
The Nebraska Cornhuskers hope to bounce back from a four-win season and haven’t missed a bowl appearance back-to-back years since 1967-68. Scott Frost comes over from UCF and his perfect season, and there’s going to be pressure to turn his school around. Offensively, Nebraska has an experienced offensive line and two reliable wide receivers in Stanley Morgan Jr. and JD Spielman, but it comes down to finding a consistent quarterback in order to improve this offense. Defensively, Erik Chinander is the new defensive coordinator and will bring that aggressive, playmaking attitude to this squad that wasn’t good a year ago. After changing positions, Ben Stille has a chance to really shine this season for the Cornhuskers. The Nebraska Cornhuskers have won five of their last six regular season openers.
The Zips are 5-2 ATS in their last 7 road games, 1-4 ATS in their last 5 vs. Big Ten and 8-3 ATS in their last 11 games overall. The Cornhuskers are 1-3-1 ATS in their last 5 non-conference games, 1-9-2 ATS in their last 12 home games and 4-10 ATS in their last 14 games overall. The over is 3-0-1 in Cornhuskers last 4 games overall and the under is 49-21 in Zips last 70 games overall.
The Akron Zips have a chance to be really good this season, as the offense has proven playmakers and the defense is highly talented with a chance to be top-25 good. This line is showing no love to an Akron squad that is extrmely balanced and should have no reason to back down from anybody on its schedule. The Nebraska Cornhuskers have their head coach, but there's questions at quarterback and the defense wasn't good to put it lightly. There's work to be done in Nebraska before just making this team huge favorites. I'm high on Akron this season, so I'm going to take my boatload of points and run.
