The Line: Nevada Wolf Pack -25 -- Over/Under: 59
The UC Davis Aggies and Nevada Wolf Pack square off Saturday night at Mackay Stadium.
The UC Davis Aggies look to bounce back after a 2-9 season that ended with eight losses in their last nine games. Ben Scott returns at quarterback after completing 64.2 percent of his passes for 1,734 yards, 19 touchdowns and seven interceptions. Ramon Vargas and Keelan Doss combined for more than 900 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns while Alex Cannon had 11 receptions. Manusamoa Luuga takes over at running back for the Aggies after racking up 137 yards and two touchdowns last season. Defensively, Keleen Culberson returns after leading UC Davis with 73 tackles, Zak Pettit had 6.5 tackles for loss and Brandon Weaver had three sacks.
The Nevada Wolf Pack look for back-to-back bowl games after seven wins in Brian Polian’s second season. Tyler Stewart takes over at quarterback, a junior who has played limited in his career. Jerico Richardson and Hasaan Henderson have combined for more than 1,200 receiving yards and seven touchdowns while Jarred Gipson had 33 catches. Don Jackson remains the lead runner for Nevada after racking up 957 yards and seven touchdowns last year. Defensively, Jordan Dobrich returns after picking up 85 tackles for the Wolf Pack, Ian Seau had 11 tackles for loss and Duran Workman had three interceptions.
UC Davis struggled big time last season against subpar compeition and now has to play a well balanced Nevada squad that can put up points in a hurry. The Aggies lost a lot of their offensive firepower from last year with the exception of Vargas.
I hate laying big chalk, especially in a season opener, but Nevada should win this contest rather easily.
