The Appalachian State Mountaineers and the North Carolina Tar Heels will match up in college football action Saturday.
Appalachian State comes in here with a 2-0 record so far. The Mountaineers blew out East Tennessee State 42-7 in their opener, then bagged a 56-41 victory over Charlotte.
In the Week 2 victory, Appalachian State QB Zac Thomas posted 182 yards with three touchdowns. Jalen Virgil led the receivers with 86 yards and two scores while Darrynton Evans went off for 234 yards and three rush TDs.
Over on the North Carolina side, they’re 2-1 this season. The Tar Heels took out South Carolina 24-20 then Miami (FL) 28-25 but fell to Wake Forest in their last outing 24-18.
In the loss to the Deacons, NC quarterback Sam Howell logged 182 yards and two scores, while Michael Carter led the rush on 96 yards. Dyami Brown was the top Heels receiver with 84 yards and a TD.
Appalachian State is 7-1 ATS in their last eight road games and 6-1 ATS in their last seven non-conference games. The Mountaineers are 5-1 ATS in their last six games in September and 14-5 in their last 19 overall.
Meanwhile, the Tar Heels are 5-1 ATS in their last six after an ATS loss and 4-1 ATS in their last five on grass. NC is 7-2 ATS in their last nine home games and 8-3 ATS in their last 11 versus a team with a winning record.
App State should be eager to get back to work here, as they’ve been quite impressive in their first two outings. The Mountaineers have chalked up a total of 98 points in those matchups.
UNC should be able to put up a good test here, though. I think it’ll be a close one and the Mountaineers have the goods to sneak in there.
