The South Carolina Gamecocks and the North Carolina Tar Heels will match up on the college football circuit Saturday.
South Carolina is coming off of a 7-6 season overall in 2018, going 4-4 in the SEC. That record left them in fourth place in the East Division but earned the Gamecocks a trip to the Belk Bowl, where they suffered a shutout loss to Virginia 28-0.
Moving into 2019, the Gamecocks will once again be helmed by Will Muschamp, who goes into his fourth season. Bryan McClendon at OC and Travaris Robinson as defensive coordinator will fill out the main coaching staff.
Over on the North Carolina side, they stumbled last season at just 2-9 overall and 1-7 in the ACC. That left the Tar Heels in the basement of the Coastal Division and led to the firing of head coach Larry Fedora.
North Carolina will move ahead with Mack Brown, who should provide some stability in his second stint with the Tar Heels. Phil Longo and Jay Bateman will take coordinator duties for NC in their first years.
The Gamecocks are 6-1 ATS in their last seven neutral-site games and 12-5 ATS in their last 17 versus the ACC. The under is 4-1 in South Carolina’s last five games in August and 11-4 in their last 15 versus the ACC.
Meanwhile, the Tar Heels are 1-3-1 ATS in their last five non-conference games and 1-5 ATS in their last six neutral-site games. North Carolina is 0-4 ATS in their last four games in August and the over is 4-1-1 in their last six overall.
Although the Gamecocks filled in a handful of solid four-star recruits this season, they’ll be hard pressed to keep up with Georgia, Florida, Missouri, Tennessee and Kentucky in a crowded and talented East Division. Still, SC does have the talent and experience for another potential bowl berth.
North Carolina has a lot of competition to contend with as well, but if things go well they could match up well with the likes of Duke and Pittsburgh.
Still, all things considered the Gamecocks should have things well in control here.
