The Line: Appalachian State Mountaineers -7.5 -- Over/Under: 55
The Ohio Bobcats and the Appalachian State Mountaineers face off o Saturday in the Camellia Bowl.
The Ohio Bobcats finished the regular season at 8-4 and had plenty of momentum winnng their las three games. While Ohio didn’t play Toledo and lost to Bowling Green in the MAC, they also knocked of Northern Illinois on the road in the season finale. The Ohio offense is averaging 27.4 points and 425.5 yards per game while turning the ball over 14 times. Bobcats QB Derrius Vick has completed 63.7 percent of his passes with 10 touchdowns and six interceptions. A.J. Oulette leads the Ohio rushing attack with 642 yards and five touchdowns and Sebastian Smith is the top receiver with 62 catches and seven touchdowns but the Bobcats do like to spread the ball around. The Oho defense is allowing 24.8 points and 373.6 yards per game with 11 interceptions, eight fumble recoveries, and 21 sacks. Blair Brown leads Ohio in tackles with 61, Quentn Poling has 58 tackles, and Devin Jones and Kurt Laseak each have 53 tackles. Ohio is going to have to come up big in this one and avoid turnovers.
The Appalachian State Mountaineers were 10-2 during the regular season but they played one of the softest schedules in all of football. Appalachian State really played two tough games, Arkansas State and Clemson losing them both by double digits. The Appalachian State offense is averaging 37.2 points and 470.7 yards per game and they have turned the ball over 19 times. Mountaineers QB Taylor Lamb has completed 61.1 percent of his passes with 29 touchdowns and eight interceptions and he has rushed for 385 yards and four touchdowns. Marcus Cox leads the Appy State ground attack with 1,261 yards and eight touchdowns and Simms McElfrish is he leading receiver with 33 catches and six touchdowns. Defensively the Mountaineers are allowing 18.2 points and 318 yards per game with 16 interceptions, five fumble recoveries, and 34 sacks. Eric Boggs leads Appalachian State defense with 95 tackles, John Law has 2 tackles, and Ronald Blair has 67 tackles including 7.5 sacks. Appalachia State fnished the season with three wins.
Ohio is 6-1 against the spread following a win, 4-1 against the spread against a team with a winning record, and 5-2 against the spread following a game that they covered the point spread. Appalachian State is 1-4 against the spread in their last five games, 5-2 against the spread against a team with a winning record, and 0-4 against the spread following a win.
On the surface this game has an offensive feel but I see the defense and ball control winning out so my free pick for this one is under the total that has been set at 55.5.
