The Norfolk State Spartans and the Old Dominion Monarchs will match up on the college football circuit Saturday to kick off their seasons.
Norfolk State ended up going 4-7 on the season in 2018 overall, and 2-5 in MEAC play. That left the Spartans way down in a tie for eighth place, just above Savannah State.
This year, the Spartans will once again be under the guidance of head coach Latrell Scott, who is entering his fifth season at the helm.
Over on the Old Dominion side, they went 4-8 overall on the year in 2018 and 2-6 in Conference USA play. That left the Monarchs in a tie for sixth place in the East Division and was a step back from 2017’s 5-7 record.
This season, Old Dominion will return Bobby Wilder as head coach in his 11th season. Brian Scott returns as OC in his 11th season as well, and co-defensive coordinators David Blackwell and Grady Brown round out the main staff.
The over is 4-0 in the Monarchs’ last four non-conference games and 4-1 in their last five home games. The over is also 8-2 in Old Dominion’s last 10 games overall.
Realistically Norfolk State is likely bound for another losing season, however the do have the goods to make a push for fourth place or so in the MEAC behind North Carolina A&T, Bethune-Cookman and Florida A&M. That would be a major step forward for the program.
As for Old Dominion, they’ve got the minor misfortune of being in a division with three solid teams in Marshall, FIU and Florida Atlantic—not to mention Middle Tennessee and Western Kentucky, who will also give the Monarchs some issues.
There’s not a whole lot of intrigue here and it’ll take a while to see what each of these teams is going to look like this year, but for now I’m sticking with ODU.
