The Oregon State Beavers and the Utah Utes face off on Thursday at Reser Stadium in a battle of 4-1 Pac-12 teams.
The Oregon State Beavers have lost just once so far this season but while they have taken care of business for the most part it isn’t clear exactly where this team stands in the conference landscape. The OSU offense is averaging 28.2 points and 393.2 yards per game and are led by QB Sean Mannion who has five touchdown passes which is well below expectations and he has thrown four interceptions. Terron Ward and Storm Woods each have 59 caries and average 5.8 yards per carry to anchor the Beavers ground game while Victor Bolden has 24 receptions and Connor Hamlett and Richard Mullaney each have 18 catches. Defensively Oregon State allows 23.4 points with six interceptions, four fumble recoveries, and 11 sacks. Michael Doctor is Oregon State’s leading tackler with 29, Obum Gwacham has 4.0 sacks, and Steven Nelson has two interceptions. This is a big game for Oregon State with the toughest part of their schedule in front of them.
The Utah Utes are coming off of a bye after bouncing back from their first loss of the year by beating UCLA on the road. Utah is still in the mix for the Pac-12 Championship Game and their offense is averaging 39.6 points per game and 420 yards led by QB Travis Wilson who has seven touchdown passes without an interception and 81 yards rushing. Devontae Booker leads the Utah rushing game with a 5.8 yards per carry average with four touchdowns and Bubba Poole is averaging 4.4 yards per carry. Kenneth Scott is the Utes leading receiver with 22 catches and three touchdowns and Dres Anderson as 15 catches and four touchdowns. Defensively Utah is allowing 21.4 points per game with six interceptions, three fumble recoveries, and 28 sacks. Jared Norris has 45 tackles including 4.0 sacks, Nate Orchard has 34 tackles and 8.5 sacks, and Hunter Dimick has 5.0 sacks. Utah’s lone loss was a one-point loss to Washington State in a game they led big in the fourth quarter.
Oregon State is 3-7 against the spread in their last 10 home games, 16-5 against the spread following a bye week, and 3-8 against the spread following a game that they covered the point spread. Utah is 4-0 against the spread against a team with a winning record, 4-1 against the spread in their last five games, and 6-16 against the spread following a win. Oregon State has covered the point spread in four of their last five games against Utah.
The total is at 57 and that looks to be more than just a little to the high side so my free pick is a string one to the under. My stronger pick is on who will cover the spread and I will post that in the Premium Area as well as on the App.
