The Southern Miss Golden Eagles visit Rice Stadium to tangle with the Rice Owls.
The Southern Miss Golden Eagles rebuild the past few seasons is finally yielding some fruit as the team stands at 6-3 following a three game winning streak. The Golden Eagles are coming off a bye week with a full head of steam after knocking off Texas El Paso 34-13 behind 523 yards of offense and a stingy ‘D’ that allowed 298 yards. Quarterback Nick Mullens led a balanced attack with 277 passing yards and four touchdowns on 23-33 with DJ Thompson hauling in ten throws for 112 yards and a pair of scores. Jalen Richard and Ito Smith were dominant on the ground with 127 yards and 104 yards respectively as USM was able to do whatever they wanted.
At 4-5 the Rice Owls still have a very good chance of a Bowl but they need to win their three remaining games. The Owls have lost consecutive contests following a 24-21 defeat at Texas El Paso as a touchdown favorite as the Miners outgained them 392-326 and would not go away with a game winning field goal with 48 seconds remaining. Rice was one dimensional with quarterback Driphus Jackson passing for 230 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 14-26. ZacH Wright was the top receiving target with six catches for 116 yards including a 36 yard scoring strike. The rushing attack was not as productive with Darik Dillard and his 53 yards on 13 touches being the only significant gains.
The under is 5-0 in Golden Eagles last 5 conference games and is 4-0 in Golden Eagles last 4 games after accumulating more than 200 yards rushing in their previous game while going 5-0 in Golden Eagles last 5 vs. a team with a losing record. The Owls are 0-4 ATS vs. a team with a winning record and the under is 5-0 in Owls last 5 games following a ATS loss while going 4-0 in Owls last 4 games after accumulating less than 100 yards rushing in their previous game. The favorite is 4-0 ATS in their last 4 meetings and the over is 5-0 in the last 5 meetings while the Golden Eagles are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 meetings. Rice might be desperate but I still prefer Southern Miss…
