The San Diego Toreros and San Diego State Aztecs meet Saturday at Qualcomm Stadium.
The San Diego Toreros look to have another great year after a 9-3 record last season that included three road wins. Trey Wheeler takes over at quarterback for the Toreros after completing 60.5 percent of 38 pass attempts for three touchdowns last season. Ross Dwelley and Jonah Hodges combined for more than 300 receiving yards and three touchdowns for San Diego while Mason Burnett had six receptions. Hodges returns at running back after leading San Diego with 1,277 yards and six touchdowns. Defensively, Nic Henson returns after racking up 90 tackles for San Diego, Jamal Agnew had four interceptions and Jonathan Petersen had five sacks.
The San Diego State Aztecs look to return to a bowl game for a sixth straight season and have won 15 games their last two years. Former Kentucky quarterback Maxwell Smith will take over as the starter for SDSU this season. Eric Judge and Lloyd Mills combined for more than 700 receiving yards and three touchdowns for SDSU while Jemond Hazely had 13 receptions as a junior. Donnel Pumphrey returns at running back after leading the Aztecs with 1,873 rushing yards and 20 touchdowns. Defensively, Calvin Munson returns after racking up 83 tackles for the Aztecs, Alex Barrett had nine tackles for loss and Jon Sanchez had 2.5 sacks.
San Diego State is a solid football team that's tough to beat at home and has one of the better running backs in the entire country. However, the Toreros are no slouch and return a lot of key guys on the defensive side of the ball that could give slowdown the Aztecs a bit.
In a season opener, I'm siding with the truckload of points.
