CFB | Georgia State Panthers (6-6) vs. San Jose State Spartans (5-7)

The San Jose State Spartans and the Georgia State Panthers face off on Saturday in Orlando in the Cure Bowl.

The San Jose State Spartans finished the regular season at 5-7 but because not enough teams were bowl eligible they backed into this spot. San Jose State lost three of their last four games with the lone win coming at Hawaii who were the worst team in the conference. The SJSU offense is averaging 28 points and 414.5 yards per game and they turned the ball over 16 times. Spartans QB Kenny Potter has completed 68.5 percent of his passes with 14 touchdowns and six interceptions and he has rushed for 346 yards and six touchdowns. Son Jose State’s rushing attack is led by second team All American Tyler Ervin who rushed for 1,469 yards and 13 touchdowns and he caught 44 passes while Billy Freeman led the team with 47 receptions. The San Jose State defense is allowing 28.2 points and 369.2 yards per game with eight interceptions, three fumble recoveries, and 13 sacks. Christian Tago leads the Spartans defense with 117 tackles, Maurice McKnight has 95 tackles, and Frank Ginda has 75 tackles. The San Jose State defense is going to have to stand up f they hope to win this game as they simply haven’t made plays.

The Georgia State Panthers won their last four games of the season to become bowl eligible finishing the season at 6-6. While Georgia State did get those sox wins, they also have early season losses to Liberty and Charlotte on their record. The Georgia State offense is averaging 27.8 points and 450.5 yards per game and they have turned the ball over 22 times. GSU QB Nick Arbuckle has completed 64.1 percent of his passes for 26 touchdowns and 11 interceptions but he isn’t very mobile. Glenn Smith leads the Panthers in rushing with 334 yards and a touchdown and Penny Hart is the top receiver with 70 receptions and eight touchdowns. The Georgia State defense is allowing 28.4 points and 415.6 yards per game with 14 interceptions, seven fumble recoveries, and 16 sacks. Joseph Peterson leads the GSU defense with 106 tackles, Tarris Batiste has 95 tackles, and Robby Baker has 66 tackles. The Georgia State defense has been far from spectacular.

San Jose State is 4-1 against the spread following a loss, 4-1 against the spread following a double-digit home loss, and 18-8 against the spread in their last 26 non-conference games. Georgia State is 4-0-1 against the spread against a team with a losing record, 5-0 against the spread following a win, and 8-3 against the spread in their last 11 non-conference games.

The defenses are the far weaker units here as neither makes big plays while the offenses are capable of the big play. Look for this one to be an exciting game and I like the over.
