The Gardner-Webb Bulldogs and South Alabama Jaguars meet Saturday at Ladd-Peebles Stadium.

The Gardner-Webb Bulldogs look to bounce back after a 4-8 season that ended with five straight losses. Tyrell Maxwell takes over at quarterback and completed 33.3 percent of 33 pass attempts. Mike Estes and Willie Jackson IV combined for more than 500 receiving yards and two touchdowns while Jacob Henderson had 10 receptions as a freshman. Khalil Lewis takes over at running back after picking up 58 yards on 19 carries as a freshman. Defensively, Aaron Cook returns after leading Gardner-Webb with 90 tackles, Jebrai Regan had 2.5 sacks and Ivan Toomer had eight pass deflections.

The South Alabama Jaguars hope to continue to build their program after making a bowl game last season. Cody Clements takes over at quarterback and is a UAB transfer who threw for more than 2,000 yards last year. Braedon Bowman and Marvin Shinn combined for more than 400 receiving yards while Claude Garrett had eight receptions as a junior. Terrance Timmons will be USA’s lead running back after racking up 403 yards and four touchdowns last season. Defensively, Roman Buchanan returns after picking up 74 tackles for the Jaguars, Akeem Lewis had two sacks and Demarius Rancifer had 1.5 tackles for loss.

South Alabama is in good hands with a proven quarterback who played fairly well in one season with the Blazers. However, like Gardner-Webb, South Alabama lost a lot of key players on both sides of the ball and is a mystery for the most part.

The Jaguars should win this game, but this much chalk this early may be pushing it. If forced to pick, I'm siding with the points.
