The Line: South Carolina Gamecocks +17.5 -- Over/Under:
The South Carolina Gamecocks and the Clemson Tigers face off on Saturday in Columbia in the College Football’s Battle of the Palmetto State.
The South Carolina Gamecocks have had a miserable season but with a win over Clemson all will be forgotten. The South Carolina offense is averaging 21 points and 358.5 yards per game and they have turned the ball over 14 times. Gamecocks QB Perry Orth has completed 55.8 percent of his passes with nine touchdowns and eight interceptions. Brandon Wilds leads the South Carolina rushing attack with 559 yards and three touchdowns and Pharoh Cooper is the top receiver with 62 catches and seven touchdowns. The South Carolina defense is allowing 26.6 points and 422.1 yards per game with 12 interceptions, five fumble recoveries, and 20 sacks. Skai Moore has 98 tackles and four interceptions, Isaiah Johnson has 68 tackles, and T.J. Gurley has 53 tackles. South Carolina is coming off of a loss to the Citadel.
The Clemson Tigers are 11-0 this season and they are the number one ranked team in the nation. The Clemson offense is averaging 38 points and 501.4 yards per game and they have turned the ball over 21 times. Clemson QB Deshaun Watson as completed 70.1 percent of his passes with 26 touchdowns and 10 interceptions and he has rushed for 642 yards and six touchdowns. Wayne Gallman leads the Tigers in rushing with 1.043 yards and nine touchdowns and Artavius Scott has 74 receptions and four touchdowns. The Clemson defense is allowing 17.6 points and 278.2 yards per game with 12 interceptions, eight fumble recoveries, and 32 sacks. B.J. Goodson leads the Clemson defense with 71 tackles, Ben Boulware has 64 tackles, and T.J. Green has 58 tackles. Clemson controls their own destiny and should be one of he four teams in the College Football Playoff this year.
South Carolina is 6-1 against the spread against the ACC, 1-7 against the spread against a team with a winning record, and 6-2 against the spread after allowing more than 200 yards rushing their previous game. Clemson is 4-1 against the spread in their last five non-conference games, 2-5 against the spread in their last seven road games, and 1-6 against the spread against a team with a losing record. The home team has covered the point spread in six of the last eight meetings of these two.
This is a ton of points for a rivalry game and even so I expect the world to be on Clemson but I expect South Carolina to show some pride and leave it all on the field and while an outright upset is unlikely, I look for them to possibly get the cover. I don’t love this one, looks like a trap.
