The Line: Southern Methodist Mustangs +34 -- Over/Under: 74
The Baylor Bears open the season on the road with the Southern Methodist Mustangs.
Chad Morris takes over an SMU program that was just 1-11 and were outscored 43-11 which explains their record. Obviously the scoring has to improve and with both Matt Davis and Garrett Krstich throwing for 855 yards the quarterback spot seems to be a coin flip although Davis looked better in the spring and his team leading 721 rushing yards and eight yard average are positives. Prescott Line was the 2nd leading runner with 256 yards which makes Davis and his legs even more valuable. Leading receiver Darius Joseph brings back 54 catches for 379 yards but the Mustangs spread the ball around in the air but still lacked production. The best unit was the O-Line that returns everyone that saw the field. The defense has pieces and is missing some so let’s just say this is a work in progress.
The Baylor Bear were in the running for a spot in the National Championship playoffs and in the end they were left out and than blew a big lead in losing their Bowl to Michigan State. The Bears dominated the scoreboard 48-26 behind 3,855 yards from Bryce Petty but with Petty in the NFL it looks like Seth Russell gets the nod under center. With 1,000+ yard receivers KD Cannon and Corey Coleman back he has guys that will catch the ball and the backfield is going to put up numbers with Shock Linwood (251-1252) and Johnny Jefferson (100-524) giving opponents a nice one, two punch which might be even better behind a loaded offensive line. The defense gets back a majority of their talent and if they can only eliminate those occasional meltdowns the sky is the limit.
The Bears are 5-0-1 ATS in their last 6 games in September and the over is 5-0 in Bears last 5 Friday games while going 12-2 in Bears last 14 non-conference games. The Mustangs are 0-6 ATS in their last 6 games in September and the over is 4-0 in Mustangs last 4 games in September while SMU are 0-8 ATS in their last 8 non-conference games. Baylor are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 meetings and the favorite is 4-0 ATS in their last 4 meetings. If the Bears play for a full 60 minutes which I hope then I’ll back them…
