CFB | Troy Trojans (1-1) at Southern Miss Golden Eagles (2-0)

The Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles hope to avoid the upset bid of the visiting Troy Trojans Saturday.

The Troy Trojans are coming off a great effort, albeit a losing one in a 30-24 defeat at Clemson in week two to fall to 1-1. The Trojans were outgained 414-386 with both teams turning the ball over three times. Troy tried to run the ball and keep Deshaun Watson on the sideline as much as possible but Jabir Frye was the only runner of note with a 66 yard touchdown jaunt. Trojans quarterback Brandon Silvers kept his team in the game by completing 24-42 for 233 yards with two touchdowns and a pair of interceptions with Deondre Douglas hauling in eleven passes for 93 yards and both scores but the bottom line was Clemson was just a step ahead on the scoreboard.

After needing a huge rally to get by Kentucky in the season opener, no heroics were needed in week two as the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles routed Savannah State 56-0 as a 56 point favorite. This was one of those games that probably should have never taken place with the Golden Eagles amassing a 615-41 advantage in yards with a 28-3 edge in first downs. Ito Smith and George Payne led a bruising Southern Miss ground game with a combined 244 yards on 22 carries with a trip to the endzone each. Golden Eagles quarterback Nick Mullens was almost perfect as he connected on 16-20 for 216 yards with three touchdowns and an interception with Isaiah Jones catching three balls for 82 yards and a TD to lead eight other receivers.

The Trojans are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 road games and are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 versus the CUSA while going  4-1 ATS vs. a team with a winning record. The Golden Eagles are 5-0-1 ATS in their last 6 games in September and are 7-1-1 ATS in their last 9 non-conference games while going  6-1-1 ATS in their last 8 games on turf. If Southern Miss plays as capable they are the pick…

I have been a sports fan since I was old enough to pick up a ball and have always been drawn to competition. I don't participate in sporting events any longer but I do like to provide my opinion on games and writing gives me that outlet. I won't always be right but I always put 100% in to every article I do whether it's the World Series or an 0-10 college football team. Mitch shares that same passion and allows me to express myself in my own way.
