The Line: Southern Miss Golden Eagles -5.5 -- Over/Under: 68
We have some college football action from Carlisle-Faulkner Field in Hattiesburg, MS as the Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks take on the Southern Miss Golden Eagles.
The Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks will look to build some momentum after narrowly escaping past Southeastern Louisiana by a final score of 34-31 in their regular season opener last time out. Caleb Evans threw for 346 yards, 2 touchdowns and an interception on 35 of 53 passing, while Derrick Gore rushed for a team-high 104 yards and a touchdown. Evans also rushed for 62 yards and a touchdown while Marcus Green led the Warhawks’ receiving corps with 99 yards and 2 touchdowns on a team-high 7 receptions while RJ Turner recorded 7 catches of his own for 95 yards. Defensively, Sam Miller accounted for 2 of ULM’s 3 sacks as a team while Corey Straighter added an interception and David Griffith recorded a team-high 4 tackles in the win.
The Southern Miss Golden Eagles will look to build on their 55-7 rout of Jackson State in their regular season opener last time out. Jack Abraham threw for 242 yards and 4 touchdowns on 21 of 27 passing, while Trivensky Mosley recorded a team-high 49 rushing yards. Tate Whatley added 41 rushing yards and a touchdown while Quez Watkins led the Golden Eagles with 8 catches for 138 yards and 3 touchdowns. Jordan Mitchell added a touchdown grab as well in the winning effort for USM. Watkins recorded a 4th touchdown for USM’s special teams with an 81 yard punt return for a touchdown while Xavier Marion recorded a fumble return for a score. The Golden Eagles also added a pair of sacks and a pair of interceptions while DQ Thomas and Ty Williams shared the team lead with 3 tackles each.
Louisiana-Monroe is 2-6 ATS in their last 8 games overall and 2-5 ATS in their last 7 non-conference games while the under is 4-1 in their last 5 games against C-USA. Southern Miss is 11-5 ATS in their last 16 games overall and 6-2 ATS in their last 8 home games while the over is 4-1 in their last 5 games following a win.
Both of these sides will take a major step up in competition this week, but I think it goes without question that I feel safer backing Southern Miss after ULM narrowly escaped their game against Southeastern Louisiana. The Golden Eagles are also a much better team at home and ULM has had their issues on the road, so I’ll lay the points with Southern Miss here.
