The Old Dominion Monarchs will travel to M.M. Roberts Stadium to take on the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles this Saturday afternoon in College Football action.
The Old Dominion Monarchs were able to notch their 2nd consecutive victory and improve to 5-5 (3-3 C-USA East) on the season after defeating the UTWP Miners 31-21 this past Saturday. Old Dominion outgained UTEP by a 441-305 margin and forced the Miners to commit two turnovers in the victory. Leading the way for the Monarchs was QB David Washington who completed 26 of 42 passes for 291 yards and 2 TD. Old Dominion currently has a turnover margin of minus 2 and are led defensively by LB TJ Ricks who has 103 tackles and 1.5 sacks.
The Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles won their 5th straight game and improved to 7-3 (5-1 C-USA West) on the season after defeating the Rice Owls 65-10 this past Saturday. The Golden Eagles has little trouble with Rice as they build a commanding 42-0 lead by halftime and outgained the Owls by a 682-214 margin. Leading the way for the Golden Eagles was QB Nick Mullens who completed 23 or 31 passes for 386 yards and 5 TD’s. On the season, Southern Mississippi is averaging 38.6 ppg on 525.1 yards per game (339.4 passing, 185.7 rushing). Leading the Golden Eagles offense has been QB Nick Mullens who has thrown for 30 TD’s and 7 INT while averaging 327.6 passing yds/game. Mullen’s does a good job spreading the ball around to his receivers Mike Thomas (95.9 yds/game, 9 TD), Casey Martin (64.0 yds/game, 6 TD), and D.J. Thompson (60.3 yds/game, 6 TD). The Southern Mississippi rushing attack is led by Jalen Richard who is averaging 88.60 yds/game and has 8 TD’s on the season. The Monarchs are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games in November and 2-6 ATS in their last 8 road games. The Golden Eagles are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 home games and 8-2 ATS in their last 10 games overall.
Southern Mississippi will need to ensure they don’t overlook Old Dominion prior to their big matchup at Louisiana Tech next week that should determine who wins the C-USA West. Old Dominion does have a decent offense but their defense has struggled against strong offenses as they gave up 55 points to Western Kentucky and 49 points to Application State earliler this year. Southern Mississippi seem to have everything flowing on the offense end last week against Rice and as Old Dominion’s defense isn’t much better than Rice’s, I expect another Southern Mississippi blow out this Saturday. Take the Golden Eagles to cover this large spread.
