The UTEP Miners and the Southern Miss Golden Eagles will meet up on the college football circuit Saturday.
UTEP enters this one at 1-2 so far. The Miners won their opener versus HBU 36-34 but have since fallen to Texas Tech 38-3 and Nevada 37-21.
In the Nevada game, UTEP quarterback Brandon Jones had 1-6 yards and a pick, while Jess Trussell led the receivers with 53 yards on three grabs. Treyvon Hughes had two touchdowns and 80 yards on the ground as well.
Over on the Southern Miss side, they’re 2-2 this year. The Eagles have beaten Alcorn State and Troy, but fallen to MS State and Alabama.
In the Alabama loss, Southern Miss QB Jack Abraham had 174 yards, one TD and one pick. De’Michael Harris led the rush (34 yards) and the receiving game (50 yards; TD) for the Eagles there.
The Miners are 17-35-1 ATS in their last 53 after an ATS loss and 8-20 ATS in their last 28 in September. UTEP is 7-19 ATS in their last 26 on turf and 1-4 ATS in their last five conference games.
Meanwhile, the Eagles are 4-1 ATS in their last five on turf and 13-5-1 ATS in their last 19 in September. Southern Miss is 5-2 ATS in their last seven after an ATS loss and the over is 6-2 in their last eight after an ATS loss.
UTEP had an early lead on Nevada, but 21 second-quarter points allowed made that disappear. Offense-wise, they’ve been pretty good outside of the Texas Tech game but they’ve given up at least 34 points in every outing.
Southern Miss has a decent ability to score this season, so I like the Eagles on the cover here.
