The Line: Southern Cal Trojans -9 -- Over/Under: 51.5
The Southern Cal Trojans host the Stanford Cardinals in an early season PAC-12 showdown.
After their offense was a no show in a season opening defeat at Northwestern the Cardianal were dominant on both sides of the ball in a 31-7 victory against visiting South Florida. The Knights never got their offense going with just 181 yards and a pair of turnovers while the Trees approached nearly 500 yards behind a pass heavy attack. Kevin Hogan led the Stanford passing game with 341 yards with three touchdowns with Bryce Love snagging a 93 yarder while Michael Rector and Christian McCaffrey on the receiving end of 53 yard and seven yard TD’s respectively. McCaffrey paced the Cardinal on the ground with 58 yards on 20 carries but between the defense and passing the ground game didn’t need to do anything.
Although the Southern Cal Trojans haven’t opened the year with tough competition they did what they were supposed to do and that is win big. The Trojans owned both sides of the line of scrimmage in a 59-9 rout of visiting Idaho in week two. The Vandals knew this was over when facing a 38-3 deficit at the half with 311 yards falling well short of the Trojans 737 yards. USC was prolific through the air with Cody Kessler throwing for 410 yards and three touchdowns with JuJu Smith the receiver of choice with ten receptions for 192 yards and a pair of scores. Ronald Jones, Justin Davis and Tre Madden were the meat of the Trojans ground game with a combined 197 yards and five touchdowns.
The under is 5-0 in Cardinal last 5 games in September and is 7-1 in Cardinal last 8 games after allowing less than 100 yards rushing in their previous game while the Cardinal are 1-6 ATS in their last 7 games after accumulating more than 280 yards passing in their previous game. The Trojans are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games after accumulating more than 450 total yards in their previous game and the under is 4-0 in Trojans last 4 conference games while the Trojans are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games in September. The underdog is 7-1 ATS in their last 8 meetings and the Cardinal are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 meetings in Southern California while the road team is 7-3 ATS in their last 10 meetings. The spread seems to be high but I believe it’s big for a reason…
