Southern University Jaguars (0-2) at TCU Horned Frogs (11-3)
The Line: TCU Horned Frogs TBA -- Over/Under:
The Southern Jaguars and the TCU Horned Frogs will meet up at Amon G. Carter Stadium on September 1 in college football action.
The Jags are fresh off a fairly successful season, logging a 7-4 record overall and a 5-2 mark in the SWAC. That was good enough for a second-place finish in the West Division. Southern couldn’t participate in the SWAC Championship or the Celebration Bowl however, due to NCAA APR violations.
Head coach Dawson Odums takes the reins for the Jaguars in his sixth year. He’s joined by offensive coordinator Chennis Berry—a six-year veteran as well—and DC Trei Oliver, who is in his third season.
Over on the TCU side, they’re entering this year on a high following a nice 2017 campaign in which they logged a 11-3 record overall with a 7-2 mark in Big 12 play. The Frogs lost to Oklahoma in the Big 12 Championship Game, but took out Stanford in the Alamo Bowl.
With Kenny Hill gone, Shawn Robinson will be taking over at QB for the Horned Frogs. Last season in limited action, Robinson had 184 yards with three touchdowns. The good news is that he’ll have RB Darius Anderson behind him, following his 768 yards and eight scores last year.
The Jags are 2-6 ATS in their last eight road games and 2-6 ATS in their last eight non-conference games. Southern is also 2-6 ATS in their last eight games overall.
Meanwhile, TCU is 3-14 ATS in their last 17 games on grass and 3-13 ATS in their last 16 home games. The Frogs are also 1-4 ATS in their last five non-conference games.
This is an interesting way to start the college football season, with a solid SWAC team coming in to face off against a TCU team that’s retooling a little bit on offense. We may see a higher-scoring game here, as both offenses are capable of putting up points. As such, I’m going with TCU for the cover and taking the over in what should be a fun game to watch.
