The Line: Temple Owls +6.5 -- Over/Under: 39
Lincoln Financial Field and the Temple Owls host the Penn State Nitany Lions in week one.
James Franklin gave the Penn State fans a much needed winning record and a Bowl win in 2014 as the defense oriented Nittany Lions outscored the opposition 21-19. The offense obviously need more punch and five star quarterback Christian Hackenberg sometimes didn’t live up to the hype with nearly 3,000 passing yards with 12 TD’s and 15 picks on less then 56%. A year under his belt and DaeSean Hamilton and Geno Lewis bring over 1,600 receiving yards back should be beneficial. If Akeel Lynch and the offensive line develop some continuity then the offense should be more of a factor and be on more of an even plain with the defensive side of the football.
The defense first Temple Owls outscored the opposition 23-17 and finished 6-6 but games were either close or not with four decided by one score. Quarterback PJ Walker threw for just over 2,300 yards but on 53% with 13 scores and 15 interceptions we see the air attack struggled. Losing top target Jalen Fitzpatrick is going to hurt with John Christopher and his 24 catches as the best the receiving corps has to offer. Walker led the ground game with 451 yards and Jahad Thomas (80-384) and several strong recruits (Zaire Williams?) will get opportunities behind a veteran offensive line. The Owls defense is loaded with virtually every player that saw the field a year ago back so will the offense help out?
The Nittany Lions are 0-3-1 ATS in their last 4 road games and are 6-0 ATS in their last 6 non-conference games while the under is 4-0 in Nittany Lions last 4 road games. The under is 6-1 in Owls last 7 vs. Big Ten and is 4-1 in Owls last 5 games overall while Temple are 2-6 ATS in their last 8 games in September. The under is 6-1 in the last 7 meetings. The Owls at home with their defense is tempting but I’ll go with the Nittany Lions…
