The Line: Texas Longhorns -17 -- Over/Under: 56
The Maryland Terrapins and Texas Longhorns meet Saturday in college football action at Royal Texas Memorial Stadium.
The Maryland Terrapins have won a combined nine games the last two seasons and hope they can take another step forward under coach D.J. Durkin. The Terps are likely going to role with North Carolina transfer Caleb Henderson, who has just five career pass attempts under his belt. It’s likely going to take time for the QB to get settled in, but there is an experienced line to protect him, and Maryland does have proven playmakers in running back Ty Johnson and wide receiver D.J. Moore. Last year the Terrapins had their struggles here and there offensively, but this could be a respectable unit if the quarterback situation gets figured out. Defensively, Shane Cockerille returns after 108 tackles last season, Jesse Aniebonam had nine sacks and Darnell Savage, Jr. had one interception. Maryland was 11th in the Big Ten last year, allowing an average of 29.5 points per game. The Maryland Terrapins have lost four straight road games.
The Texas Longhorns haven’t been the Texas Longhorns in years, so it’s going to be interesting to see if coach Tom Herman can get things back to where they used to be. Shane Buechele threw for nearly 3,000 yards and 21 touchdowns as a freshman, and he has four offensive linemen returning to help him grow as a sophomore. Chris Warren III takes over as the full time running back after averaging nearly six yards in limited time while receivers Armanti Foreman and Devin Duvernay return as a duo that combined for six receiving touchdowns. Texas should have a far more consistent offense this season with returning talent and a good offensive line. Defensively, Anthony Wheeler returns after 66 tackles last season, Breckyn Hager had six sacks and P.J. Locke III had two interceptions. Texas could improve defensively after allowing 30-plus points last year. The Texas Longhorns have won six of their last nine home games.
The Terrapins are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 non-conference games, 0-6 ATS in their last 6 road games and 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games overall. The Longhorns are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 home games and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 vs. Big Ten. The under is 7-0 in Longhorns last 7 games overall and the under is 4-1-1 in Terrapins last 6 non-conference games.
The Texas Longhorns have been waiting to find a coach who can get the most out of their talent and get the program back to the glory days. Herman seems to be that guy, as he has the it factor and is highly respected from his players. The Maryland Terrapins are one of those teams that has to prove to me they can compete against big boys, as I'd argue they're a squad that didn't deserve an invite to the Big Ten. The Terps just can't match the Longhorns talent wise and if the Longhorns play to their potential early, this one could get ugly.
