The 12th ranked West Virginia Mountaineers will travel to Royal Texas Memorial Stadium to take on the 15th ranked Texas Longhorns this upcoming Saturday afternoon in College Football action.
The 12th ranked West Virginia Mountaineers improved to 6-1 (4-1 Big 12) on the season after defeating the Baylor Bears, 58-14, this past Thursday. West Virginia had their way offensively with the Bears right from the start and had no trouble securing the victory after taking a 41-0 halftime lead. West Virginia outgained Baylor by a 568-287 margin and won the turnover battle by a 4-0 margin. Leading the way for the Mountaineers was QB Will Grier who completed 17 of 27 passes for 353 yards and 3 TD’s. On the season, West Virginia is averaging 39.9 ppg on 479.1 total yards per game (331.3 passing yds/g; 147.9 rushing yds/g). Offensively, West Virginia has been led by QB Will Grier who has completed 70.3% of his passes for 25 TD & 7 INT while averaging 324.6 passing yds/g. The top receiving threats for Grier and the Mountaineers have been David Stills IV (5.3 rec/g; 75.6 yds/g; 9 TD), Marcus Simms (4.1 rec/g; 73.0 yds/g; 2 TD), and Gary Jennings Jr. (4.7 rec/g; 71.7 yds/g; 8 TD). The 15th ranked Texas Longhorns had their 6-game winning streak snapped and dropped to 6-2 (4-1 Big 12) on the season after being defeated by the Oklahoma State Cowboys, 38-35, this past Saturday. Texas had no answers for the high-scoring Cowboys offensive attack and although they did fight back to make it just a 31-28 deficit early in the 4th quarter, Oklahoma State was able to put the game away after a 10 yard TD by Taylor Cornelius gave the Cowboys a two possession lead with just 5:44 left in regulation. Texas was outgained by Oklahoma State by a 502-402 margin and forced no turnovers in the loss. Leading the way for the Longhorns was QB Sam Ehlinger who completed 22 of 42 passes for 283 yards and 2 TD’s. On the season, Texas is averaging 31.3 ppg on 409.4 total yards per game (255.4 passing yds/g; 154.0 rushing yds/g). Offensively, Texas has been led by QB Sam Ehlinger who has completed 63.5% of his passes for 13 TD’s & 2 INT while averaging 227.1 passing yds/g. Ehlinger is also a threat with his legs as he has 8 rushing TD’s on the season while averaging 34.6 yds/g. The top receiving targets for Ehlinger and the Longhorns have been Lil’Jordan Humphrey (5.8 rec/g; 80.6 yds/g; 4 TD), Collin Johnson (5.8 rec/g; 78.5 yds/g; 5 TD), and Devin Duvernay (2.6 rec/g; 29.6 yds/g; TD). Leading the way for the Texas backfield has been Keaontay Ingram (11.0 att/g; 65.0 yds/g; 2 TD) and Tre Watson (11.8 att/g; 43.3 yds/g; 2 TD). Defensively, Texas is allowing their opponents to average 24.9 ppg on 378.5 total yards per game (245.3 passing yds/g; 133.3 rushing yds/g).
The Mountaineers are 4-1-1 ATS vs. a team with a winning record and 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games overall. The Longhorns are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games after accumulating more than 280 yards passing in their previous game and 11-5-1 ATS in their last 17 games vs. a team with a winning record.
West Virginia was impressive in their victory against Baylor and comes into this game with the 9th ranked passing offense in College Football. Texas couldn’t get it done on the road agianst Oklahoma State, however, the Longhorns are a very solid team on both sides of the ball and have the talent level to compete with almost anyone in College Football. I just don’t feel West Virginia is as good as their ranking might say as the Mountaineers are just 1-1 on the road this season and as I think Texas will bounce back at home in this one, I’m taking the Longhorns to cover this small spread.
