The Line: UAB Blazers -17 -- Over/Under:
The Charlotte 49ers and the UAB Blazers meet in C-USA college football action from Legion Field in Birmingham on Saturday evening.
The Charlotte 49ers will look for a big road win to get them above .500, currently sitting at 2-2 following a 49-31 loss to UMASS in their last outing. Chris Reynolds leads the Niners with 860 passing yards on 71 of 110 passing with 6 touchdowns and an interception while Benny LeMay leads the 49ers on the ground with 331 rushing yards and 3 TDs. Victor Tucker is the top receiver in Charlotte’s receiving corps, with 26 catches for 369 yards and 2 touchdowns this season. As a team, Charlotte is averaging 357 yards of total offense to go along with 25.5 points per game. The 49ers are also solid against the run, holding their opposition to just 98.8 rushing yards per game, good for 12th in the FBS.
The UAB Blazers will look for another win to improve on their 2-1 mark following a 31-24 win over Tulane in their last outing. A.J. Erdely has thrown for 557 yards on 46 of 81 passing with 3 touchdowns and 4 interceptions. Spencer Brown has rushed for a team-high 297 yards while Collin Lisa is the Blazers’ top receiver with 13 catches for 130 yards and a touchdown this season. As a team, UAB is averaging 478 yards of total offense per game, including 280.7 rushing yards per game, good for 8th in the country while also logging 35.7 points per game this season. The Blazers are also air-tight defending the pass, giving up the 2nd-fewest passing yards per game in the country, giving up just 123.3 per game this season.
Charlotte is 5-1 ATS in their last 6 conference games and 2-6 ATS in their last 8 road games while the over is 5-2 in their last 7 games overall. UAB is 9-1-1 ATS in their last 11 home games and 12-5-1 ATS in their last 18 games overall while the under is 6-1 in their last 7 conference games.
I know UAB is probably the better team here and are at home, but let’s not forget this is the same Blazers team that lost to Coastal Carolina as a 8.5 point favorite two weeks ago and narrowly escaped against a mediocre Tulane team in their last time up. Charlotte is good enough to hang with the Blazers, as we have seen before including last year’s 1 point overtime win for the 49ers. I think we see another close game again so I’ll take the points with Charlotte in this one.
