The Line: UAB Blazers TBA -- Over/Under:
The Savannah State Tigers and the UAB Blazers will meet out at Legion Field on Thursday, August 30 in college football action.
Savannah State is coming off a pretty ugly 3-8 season in 2017, going 3-5 in the MEAC. That result left them in seventh place in the conference. Third-year head coach Erik Raeburn has some work to do here. The good news is that Raeburn will have his coordinators back in Erik Raeburn (offense) and Chad Williams (defense) along with another year of familiarity with their system. They’ll have 10 returning starters on offense and six on defense this season.
As for UAB, they logged a pretty solid 8-5 mark in 2017, going 6-2 in Conference USA play. That gave the Blazers a tie for second place in the West Division. UAB went to the Bahamas Bowl, but lost to Ohio there.
The good news for the Blazers is that quarterback AJ Erdely will be returning. He finished the season with 2331 yards, 16 touchdowns and four picks through the air, and also put up 320 yards rushing with 13 touchdowns.
Savannah State is 3-0-1 ATS in their last four non-conference games and 3-0-1 ATS in their last four games overall. The Tigers are also 3-0-1 ATS in their last four road games.
Meanwhile, the Blazers are 5-0-1 ATS in their last six games on turf, and the under is 4-0 in the Blazers’ last four games overall. The over is 5-0 in UAB’s last five Thursday games.
UAB’s offense is pretty well set, as they’ve got a handful of key players returning from a fairly successful season in 2017. With that familiarity going, I think the Blazers can hit the ground running here. Still, Savannah State could surprise some people with a little success in 2018. I’m likely going UAB for the cover, but we'll see what the numbers look like.
