The Southern Utah Thunderbirds and the UNLV Rebels will match up on the college football gridiron Saturday.
Southern Utah enters this season following a 1-10 campaign in 2018, going a dismal 1-7 in Big Sky Conference play. That mark left the Thunderbirds in second-to-last place in the standings just above Sacramento State.
This season, the Thunderbirds bring back head coach Demario Warren in his fourth year, joined by OC Justin Walterscheid. Brandon Fisher is the new face on the coaching staff in his first year as DC.
Over on the UNLV side, they finished a tepid 4-8 in 2018, and went 2-6 in Mountain West Conference play. That record left the Rebels in fifth place in the West Division.
This year, UNLV brings back head coach Tony Sanchez and OC Barney Cotton, each in their fifth seasons in those roles. Defensive coordinator Tim Skipper also returns for his second year.
The Thunderbirds are 0-5 ATS in their last five overall and 0-4 ATS in their last four non-conference games. Southern Utah is 5-1 ATS in their last six versus the Mountain West as well.
Meanwhile, the over is 10-3 in UNLV’s last 13 non-conference games and 19-7 in their last 26 home games. The over is 5-2 in the Rebels’ last seven games on turf.
Realistically it’s probably going to be another lost season for Southern Utah, as they don’t really have the goods to get anywhere near the middle of the pack in the conference.
UNLV probably won’t get anywhere near the top of their division—let alone conference—either, but they’re still operating on a much higher comparative level. I’m sticking with the Rebels here.
