The Northern Illinois Huskies will travel to Raymond James Stadium to take on the South Florida Bulls this Saturday night in College Football action.
The Northern Illinois Huskies used a late 4th quarter TD to force OT, however, couldn’t complete the comeback victory and fell to the Wyoming Cowboys 40-34 in double-OT this past Saturday night. Northern Illinois was outgained by Wyoming by a 488-462 margin and couldn’t force the Cowboys into committing any turnovers in the loss. Offensively, Northern Illinois was led by QB Drew Hare who completed 24 of 39 passes for 329 yards and 3 TD’s. The Huskies really struggled rushing the ball against the Cowboys and their First Team All-MAC RB, Joel Bouagnon, only gained 19 yards on 10 carries in the loss. WR Kenny Golladay had a big day for the Huskies as he finished the game with 144 yards and 2 TD’s on 10 receptions. Defensively, Northern Illinois really struggled towards the end of the 2015 season, allowing their opponents to average 38.3 ppg over their last three games. The Huskies could find any answers to stopping the Cowboys rushing attack as they allowed a total of 243 rushing yards and allowed two Wyoming receivers to top the 100 yard receiving mark. DB Mycial Allen (13 tackles) and LB Jamall Payton (8 tackles) led the way for the Huskies defense.
The South Florida Bulls had no problem building an early lead and easily defeated the FCS Towson Tigers 56-20 to open up their 2016 season with a victory. South Florida scored 21 points in the 3rd quarter to extend their lead to a 49-17 margin and outgained the Tigers by a 444-292 margin in the victory. South Florida used a solid rushing attack that gained 214 total yards and had five players who had at least 30 rushing yards. Leading the rushing attack was RB Marion Mack who had 58 yards and a TD on 9 carries and QB Quinton Flowers who had 46 yards and 2 TD’s on 9 carries. QB Quinton Flowers completed 8 for 18 passes for 178 yards, 2 TD’s, and a INT. WR Marq Scantling lead the Bulls WR’s with 79 receiving yards and a TD on 3 receptions. Defensively, South Florida returned 7 seven starters from a defense that ranked t-13th in turnover margin and 35th in scoring defense at 22.9 ppg. South Florida made life difficult for Towson’s QB, Morgan Mahalak, as he only was able to complete just 16 of 36 attempts for 165 yards and an INT. Leading the way defensively for the Bulls in their victory was LB Nigel Harris (6 tackles, 1 sack, 1 INT) and DB Malik Dixon (6 tackles, 1 INT).
The Huskies are 4-0-1 ATS in their last 5 road games vs. a team with a winning home record and 19-6-2 ATS in their last 27 road games. The Bulls are 6-1-1 ATS in their last 8 home games and 5-1 ATS vs. a team with a losing record.
Northern Illinois has a lot of talented players on the both side of the ball however, are still pretty inexperienced on the defensive end and haven’t proven that they are able to stop the ball. South Florida made a giant leap forward last season going 8-5 and could be even better this season even after ranking 41st in scoring offense and 35th in scoring defense in 2015. South Florida is a very talented team that could make some major noise these season and as I think they will have no trouble putting up points on the Huskies defense, I think they’ll be able to do enough at home to cover this large spread. Take South Florida to cover.
