The Fresno State Bulldogs will travel to Romney Stadium to take on the Utah State Aggies this Saturday night in College Football action.
The Fresno State Bulldogs lost their 5th consecutive game and dropped to 1-6 (0-3 MW) on the season after being defeated by the San Diego State Aztecs, 17-3, this past Saturday. The Bulldogs, like most teams in the country, had trouble slowing down the Aztecs Donnel Humphrey and couldn’t find ways to put points on the scoreboard against the strong Aztec defense. Fresno State was outgained by San Diego State by a 364-217 margin and lost the turnover battle by a 3-0 margin. Leading the way for the Bulldogs was WR KeeSean Johnson who had 8 receptions for 56 yards. On the season, Fresno State is averaging just 20.6 ppg on 354.9 total yards per game (232.6 passing, 122.3 rushing). Offensively, the Bulldogs have been led by QB Chason Virgil who has completed 50.0% of his passes for 9 TD and 6 INT while averaging 215.0 passing yds/game. Aaron Peck (4.9 rec/g, 73.0 yds/g, 3 TD), KeeSean Johnson (6.3 rec/g, 65.4 yds/g, 3 TD), and Jamire Jordan (3.6 rec/g, 64.9 yds/g, 2 TD) have been the biggest receiver threats for Chason Virgil and the Bulldogs. Leading the Fresno State backfield has been Dontel James who has 3 TD on the season while averaging 71.7 yds/g on 19.0 att/g. Defensively, Fresno State is allowing their opponents to average 33.6 ppg on 437.6 total yards per game (164.1 passing, 273.4 rushing). The Bulldogs have only forced 5 opponent turnovers on the season and have an over turnover margin of -7.
The Utah State Aggies lost their 3rd consecutive game and dropped to 2-4 (0-3 MW) on the season after being defeated by the Colorado State Rams, 31-24, on October 8th. Utah State held a 24-10 lead against the Rams at halftime, couldn’t generate any offense in the 2nd half which allowed Colorado State to rally for the victory. Utah State was outgained by Colorado State by a 464-461 margin and lost the turnover battle by a 2-0 margin. Leading the way for Utah State was QB Kent Myers who completed 19 of 34 passes for 210 yards and INT while also rushing for 50 yards and 2 TD. On the season, Utah State is averaging 23.3 ppg on 391.3 total yards per game (218.2 passing, 173.2 rushing). Offensviely, the Aggies have been led by QB Kent Myers who has completed 58.9% of his passes for 4 TD and 4 INT while averaging 215.3 passing yds/game. Myers also has the ability to contribute with his legs as he has 3 rushing TD on the season while average 34.33 rushing yds/game. Also in the backfield with Myers are Tonny Lindsey (12.67 att/g, 58.67 yds/g, 3 TD) and Devante Mays (9.0 att/g, 78.0 yds/g, 3 TD). Rayshad Lewis (4.3 rec/g, 62.2 yds/g, TD), Ron’Quavion Tarver (3.7 rec/g, 44.8 yds/g, TD), Andrew Rodriguez (2.8 rec/g, 29.0 yds/g, TD), and Watt Houston (2.8 rec/g, 26.8 yds/g, TD) are the leading receivers for the Aggies. Defensively, Utah State is allowing their opponents to average 25.0 ppg on 366.3 total yards per game (208.5 passing, 157.8 rushing). Utah State has committed just 6 turnovers on the season however, have an overall turnover margin of just 0.
The Bulldog are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games after accumulating less than 100 yards rushing in their previous game however, are just 1-6 ATS in their last 7 games following a ATS win. The Aggies are 6-0 ATS in their last 6 games following a bye week however, 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games after accumulating more than 200 yards rushing in their previous game.
Fresno State defense ranks just 105th in scoring defense and 101st in total defense in the country, however, Fresno State has to be happy with the recent defensive effort they had against a very good San Diego State team. Utah State continues to struggle finding ways to put points up on the board and just hasn’t been the same without Devante Mays who had missed the last three games due to a knee injury and is currently questionable for this matchup. Utah State is tough place to play, especially when the Aggies have had an extra week to prepare, however, Fresno State has played a few good teams (Tulsa, SDSU) tough this season and as I just can’t trust the Utah State offense to score, I’m taking the Bulldogs and the points in this one. Take Fresno State and the points.
