The Line: Utah State Aggies -16 -- Over/Under:
The New Mexico State Aggies and the Utah State Aggies will meet up at Maverik Stadium in college football action on Saturday, September 8.
New Mexico State has played a pair of games so far in this young season, falling in both. The Aggies dropped to Wyoming 29-7 back on August 25 and Minnesota 48-10 last Thursday. NM State allowed 28 points to the Gophers in the second quarter of that one.
In the Minnesota loss, New Mexico State QB Matt Romero went 29-of-53 for 233 yards, one TD and one INT. Romero also led the Aggies in rushing with 24 yards on 14 carries.
As for Utah State, they’re coming in here at 0-1 following a tough 38-31 loss against Michigan State last Friday. In that game, the Aggies kept it close most of the way and were outscored 18-17 in the second half.
Jordan Love posted 319 yards on 29-of-44 passing, but also threw two picks and failed to find the end zone (aside from his lone rush TD). Darwin Thompson had a pair of running scores but tallied just 28 yards overall from 10 totes.
New Mexico State is 3-0-1 ATS in their last four games in September, 3-0-1 ATS in the last four road games versus a team with a losing home record and the over is 6-0-1 in their last seven games on fieldturf.
Meanwhile, the over is 5-0 in Utah State’s last five games in September and 6-1 in the last seven games after accumulating less than 100 yards rushing. Utah State is 0-5 in their last five after passing for more than 280 yards.
New Mexico State really doesn’t have a lot of things to hang their proverbial hat on right now aside from a pretty well-rounded receiving performance in the Gophers loss. Utah State will be kicking themselves for their opener loss for quite some time, but if they can clean a few things up the memory shouldn’t stick around for too long. I’m going to go with Utah State here.
