The UNLV Rebels will travel to Romney Stadium to take on the Utah State Aggies this Saturday afternoon in College Football action.
The UNLV Rebels lost their 2nd straight game and dropped to 2-3 (0-1 MW) on the season after being defeated by the New Mexico Lobos, 50-14, this past Saturday. UNLV has no answers on the defensive end for the Lobo’s and couldn’t fight back after they went into halftime trailing by a 29-0 margin. UNLV was outgained by a 502-166 margin and lost the turnover battle by a 2-1 margin. Leading the way for the Rebels was QB Max Gilliam who completed 15 of 35 passes for 123 yards, 2 TD, & 1 INT. On the season, UNLV is averaging 30.6 ppg on 376.2 total yards per game (98.4 passing yds/g; 277.8 rushing yds/g). Offensively, UNLV is currently without QB Armani Rodgers, who is out indefinitely due to a foot injury. Rodgers had only completed 41.5% of his passes for 6 TD & 4 INT while averaging 92.3 passing yds/g however, was a main part of the Rebels passing attack as he had 6 rushing TD’s on the season while averaging 122.0 rushing yds/g on 17.8 att/g. Replacing Rogers at the QB position is Max Gilliam who had completed 44.4% of his passes for 123 yards, 2 TD, & 1 INT on the season and is not much of a running threat. In the backfield for UNLV is Lexington Thomas who has 5 TD’s on the season and is averaging 100.2 rushing yds/g on 17.0 att/g. The top receivers for the Rebels have been Mekhi Stevenson (1.6 rec/g; 22.2 yds/g; TD) and Darren Woods Jr. (1.8 rec/g; 24.8 yds/g; 2 TD). Defensively, UNLV is allowing their opponents to average 32.2 ppg on 413.0 total yards per game (218.4 passing yds/g; 194.6 rushing yds/g).
The Utah State Aggies won their 4th straight game and improved to 4-1 (1-0 MW) on the season after defeating the BYU Cougars, 45-20, this past Saturday. It was an impressive showing for the Aggies on the road as they had little trouble putting away BYU after taking a 35-7 lead with 4:55 left in the 3rd quarter. Utah State outgained BYU by a 388-361 margin and won the turnover battle by a 3-0 margin. Leading the way for the Aggies was QB Jordan Love who completed 18 of 28 passes for 165 yards and 4 TD. On the season, Utah State is averaging 50.2 ppg on 457.6 total yards per game (260.6 passing yds/g; 197.0 rushing yds/g). Offensively, Utah State has been led by Jordan Love who has completed 66.3% of his passes for 9 TD & 3 INT while averaging 247.0 passing yds/g. The top receivers for Love and the Aggies have been Ron’quavion Tarver (5.0 rec/g; 49.2 yds/g; 2 TD), Dax Raymond (3.2 rec/g; 43.4 yds/g; TD), Jalen Greene (3.4 rec/g; 36.0 yds/g; 2 TD), and Aaren Vaughns (2.2 rec/g; 28.2 yds/g; 2 TD). Leading the way for the Utah State backfield has been Darwin Thompson (9.0 att/g; 74.8 yds/g; 6 TD) and Gerold Bright (10.8 att/g; 69.8 yds/g; 4 TD). Defensively, Utah State is holding their opponents to an average of 23.0 ppg on 358.2 total yards per game (200.6 passing yds/g; 157.6 rushing yds/g).
The Rebels are 6-0 ATS in their last 6 games following an ATS loss however, are just 19-40-2 ATS in their last 61 games after accumulating less than 100 yards rushing in their previous game. The Aggies are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games overall and 4-1 ATS in their last 5 home games.
UNLV is a team that has some talent, however, the loss of Armani Rodgers is huge as not having that 2nd threat of the backfield with Lexington Thomas really hurts the offensive game plan for the Rebels. Utah State has been one of the more impressive teams so far early in the season as after almost upsetting Michigan State on the road to start their season, they’ve had their way offensively with everyone and is coming up an impressive 45-point performance on the road against a very good BYU defense. Utah State is very balanced on the offensive end and should be able to put up a ton of points agianst the less than average UNLV defense and I just don’t think the Rebels offense can keep up with the Aggies with Rodgers, I’m taking Utah State to cover this large home spread.
