The Northern Illinois Huskies and the Utah Utes meet in a week 2 college football matchup from Rice-Eccles Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The Northern Illinois Huskies come into this game looking to build on a 24-10 win over Illinois State in their last outing. Ross Bowers threw for 299 yards, 2 touchdowns and an interception on 20 of 33 passing while Tre Harbison rushed for 99 yards on 23 carries. Tyrice Richie hauled in 3 passes for 102 yards and both of NIU’s touchdowns in the win while Daniel Crawford had 3 catches for 75 yards and Mitchell Brinkman hauled in a team-high 4 grabs for 51 yards. On defense, Jalen McKie had a pick-six while Quintin Wynne had a sack and Mark Aitken led the Huskies with 5 tackles in the winning effort.
The Utah Utes will also look to build on a strong showing in the season opener after a 30-12 win over state rival BYU in their last outing. Tyler Huntley threw for 106 yards on 13 of 16 passing while also rushing for 39 yards. Zack Moss led the Utes with an impressive 187 yards and a touchdown on 29 carries while Jaylen Dixon had a rushing score of his own. Brant Kuithe had 3 receptions for a team-high 37 yards while Demari Simpkins had a team-high 4 catches for 35 yards. On defense, the Utes had a pair of interceptions that were returned for touchdowns from Julian Blackmon and Francis Bernard with Blackmon leading the Utes with 4 tackles. Jaylon Johnson also had 4 tackles while Mike Tafua had a sack.
Northern Illinois is 33-16-2 ATS in their last 51 road games and 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games following an ATS win while the under is 8-2 in their last 10 games in September. Utah is 18-7 in their last 25 non-conference games and 1-6 ATS in their last 7 home games against a team with a winning road record while the over is 4-0 in their last 4 home games.
I don’t think anyone is disagreeing with the statement that Utah is the better of the two teams here. However, this feels like a lot of points to be laying with a Northern Illinois team that has a strong record of hanging around on the road. The Utes also won the only meeting between the two sides by 11 points last season. I just think that Northern Illinois has enough talent on both sides of the ball to keep this one respectable, so I’ll take a stab at Northern Illinois and the points here.
