FIU Golden Panthers (1-4) at UTEP Miners (1-4)
|Date & Time||Saturday October 8, 2016, 8:00 PM (EDT)|
The Line: UTEP Miners -4.5 -- Over/Under:
The FIU Golden Panthers and UTEP Miners meet late Saturday night in a C-USA clash at the Sun Bowl.
The FIU Golden Panthers have a chance to win back-to-back games for the first time since the middle of the 2014 season. Alex McGough is completing 52.7 percent of his passes for 747 yards, two touchdowns and six interceptions. McGough has one or less touchdown passes in his last seven games. Jonnu Smith and Stantley Thomas have combined for 443 receiving yards and one touchdown while Austin Maloney has 14 receptions. The FIU Golden Panthers ground game is averaging 150.4 yards per contest, and Alex Gardner leads the way with 407 yards and three touchdowns. Defensively, FIU is allowing 36 points and 437.2 yards per game. Treyvon Williams leads the Golden Panthers with 57 tackles, Fermin Silva has two sacks and Deonte Wilson has one interception.
The UTEP Miners are desperate for a big home victory in order to snap a four-game losing streak. Zack Greenlee is completing 55.6 percent of his passes for 504 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions. Greenlee has moved the chains through the air 22 times this season. Cole Freytag and Eddie Sinegal have combined for 356 receiving yards and one touchdown while Hayden Plinke has 12 receptions. The UTEP Miners ground game is averaging 155.8 yards per contest, and Aaron Jones leads the way with 660 yards and five touchdowns. Defensively, UTEP is allowing 38.2 points and 425.2 yards per game. Dante Lovilette leads the Miners with 36 tackles, Nick Usher has 2.5 sacks and Nik Needham has six pass deflections.
The Golden Panthers are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games in October and 1-7-1 ATS in their last 9 games overall. The Miners are 11-5 ATS in their last 16 home games and 6-2 ATS in their last 8 conference games. The under is 5-1 in Golden Panthers last 6 road games and 9-2 in Miners last 11 games overall.
UTEP has scored a combined 35 points in its last four games, making that opening week victory over New Mexico State feel like six years ago. However, FIU hasn't been much better on either side of the ball and has allowed 31 or more points in four of its five games this season. The home team has blown the road team out of the water in the two meetings between these clubs and you have to feel this is going to be a wake up game for the UTEP Miners. After all, the FIU Golden Panthers have lost seven straight road games.
I'll take the UTEP Miners and the reasonable line.
