The Line: Vanderbilt Commodores +9.5 -- Over/Under:
The Vanderbilt Commodores and Florida Gators face off on Saturday in Nashville in week 5 SEC college football action.
The Vanderbilt Commodores are 202 this season and they are clearly an improved team over what we have seen from them in recent years. The Vandy offense is averaging 23.8 points, 148.8 rushing yards and 163.8 passing yards per game and they have turned the ball over just 3 times. Commodores QB Kyle Shurmer has completed 55.2 percent of his passes with 3 touchdowns ad 2 interceptions Running back Ralph Webb is Vanderbilt’s top option in the backfield rushing for 472 yards and 5 touchdowns and Kalija Lipscomb has 11 catches and 2 touchdowns. The Vandy defense is allowing 26.2 points and 452.5 yards per game with 3 interceptions, 5 fumble recoveries, and 3 sacks. Zach Cunningham is Vanderbilt’s leading tackler with 38 and Ryan White and LaDarius Wiley each have 23 tackles. Vanderbilt is coming off of an exciting one-point win over Western Kentucky.
The Florida Gators are 3-1 this season and are coming off of their first loss of the year after blowing a big lead at Tennessee last week. The Florida offense is averaging 32.3 points, 178 rushing yards, and 272 passing yards per game and they have turned the ball over 4 times. Austin Appleby has taken over at QB for the injured Luke Del Rio and he completed 56.8 percent of his passes for 326 yards with 3 touchdowns and 1 interception. Jordan Scarlett is UF’s top rusher with 219 yards and 3 touchdowns and Mark Thompson has 186 yards and 2 touchdowns while Antonio Callaway is the top receiver with 17 catches and 2 touchdowns and Brandon Powell has 15 catches and 2 touchdowns. Defensively the Gators are allowing 13 points and 221.8 yards per game with 6 interceptions, 1 fumble recovery, and 17 sacks. Alex Anzalone is Florida’s top tackler with 26, Jarrad Davis has 25, and Marcus Maye has 22 tackles. Florida is playing their second road game in as many weeks and need to bounce back from their worst half of football in several years.
Vanderbilt is 1-4 against the spread following a game that they covered the point spread, 0-4 against the spread following a win, and 0-5 against the spread at home against a team with a winning road record. Florida is 9-2 against the spread in their last 11 road games, 5-1 against the spread following a loss, and 1-4 against the spread in their last 5 games. The road team has covered the point spread in the last 8 meetings of these two teams.
This is a lot of points for a defensive game so I will take the point with the Commodores.
