The Old Dominion Monarchs and the Virginia Tech Hokies will match up on the college football circuit Saturday.
The Monarchs come in here at 1-0 on the young season, following a tense 24-21 win over the Norfolk State Spartans. Old Dominion was up 14-6 at halftime but had to fend off some late fireworks to seal the victory.
Stone Smartt managed 158 yards and an interception in the Monarchs’ Week 1 win, and Elijah Davis had 62 yards and a TD on the ground. Eric Kumah was tops in receiving for Old Dominion there, with 65 yards on four grabs.
Over on the Virginia Tech side, they opened up with a tough loss against Boston College. The Hokies scored seven in each quarter, but couldn’t get past the Eagles’ 21 points in the second quarter.
Ryan Willis had an up-and-down day for the Hokies in Week 1, tossing for 344 yards, four touchdowns and three interceptions. Leading the way in receiving for VT was Hezekiah Grimsley with 98 yards and a score.
The Monarchs are 6-14 ATS in their last 20 non-conference games and 2-5 ATS in their last seven road games. Old Dominion is 5-13 ATS in their last 18 in September and 1-4 ATS in the last five versus the ACC.
Meanwhile, the Hokies are 8-3 ATS in their last 11 games in September and 9-4 ATS in their last 13 non-conference games. Virginia Tech is 2-5 ATS in their last seven versus CUSA and 1-6 ATS in their last eight on grass.
Old Dominion is probably a better team than they looked like in their opener, even though there were a handful of solid performances for the Monarchs in that game. I expect a few more good lines here.
As for Virginia Tech, a few blunders probably cost them the Week 1 game, and with some polish they should come out and play fairly well here also. Provided the Hokies make some adjustments, I like them on the cover here.
