Amber Searls-USA TODAY Sports

The Richmond Spiders and the Virginia Cavaliers will matchup in college football action on September 1 from Scott Stadium.

Richmond is fresh off a 6-5 overall record in 2017, and they went 4-4 in the CAA. That left the Spiders in sixth place. Richmond did post some notable wins they can build on, however, including victories against Albany and Villanova.

The Spiders get back second-year head coach Russ Huesman this season, and he’s joined by offensive coordinator Jeff Durden and defensive coordinator Adam Braithwaite, who are both in their second seasons as well.

As for the Cavaliers, they managed to go 6-7 last season and 3-5 in ACC play. That put Virginia in a three-way tie for fourth place in the Coastal Division. The Cavaliers got an invitation to play in the Military Bowl, but lost to Navy in that one.

With QB Kurt Benkert gone, the Cavaliers will look quite a bit different under center. It’s looking like Bryce Perkins will be taking the reins here, and he’ll have RB Jordan Ellis behind him after his 215 carries for 836 yards and six scores last season.

The Spiders are 1-4 ATS in their last five games on grass and 3-1-1 ATS in their last five games in the ACC. The over is 3-1-1 in the Spiders’ last five games overall.

Meanwhile, the Cavs are 1-3-1 ATS in their last five versus the CAA and 2-5 ATS in their last seven overall. The under is 7-3 in Virginia’s last 10 home games.

This should be a pretty fun matchup to watch, especially if you’re a Virginia resident. It will be interesting to see what the new-look offense can do for the Cavaliers, but in the early-going I’d imagine they’ll rely on a steady dose of the run. I was going to go with Virginia here, but not with such a thick line.
