Wake Forest -3.5 O/U: 63.5
The Utah State Aggies will match up with the Wake Forest Demon Deacons in college football activity on Friday.
The Aggies are coming out of a successful campaign in 2018, bagging a 11-2 record overall and a 7-1 record in Mountain West play. Utah State tied for first place in the conference, but lost out on the championship by way of a head-to-head loss with Boise State. Still, the Aggies drilled North Texas 52-13 in the New Mexico Bowl to end the year on a high note.
Utah State will get head coach Gary Andersen (again) this year, so the transition to a new system shouldn’t be too difficult. Andersen previously coached the Aggies from 2009-12.
As for the Demon Deacons, they managed a winning season in 2018 at 7-6 overall but went just 3-5 in a tough ACC. Wake Forest earned a bid to the Birmingham Bowl, where they took out Memphis 37-34.
This will be head coach Dave Clawson’s sixth season as head coach. He will oversee offensive coordinator Warren Ruggiero (also in his sixth year) and new defensive coordinator Lyle Hemphill as the team attempts to return to a bowl game.
The Aggies are 5-0 ATS in their last five non-conference games and 8-2 in their last 10 on turf. Utah State is 10-3 ATS in their last 13 overall and 18-7-1 ATS in their last 26 Friday games.
Meanwhile, the Demon Deacons are 3-8 ATS in their last 11 on turf and 2-7 ATS in their last nine home games. The under is 4-1 in Wake Forest’s last five overall and the over is 8-3 in their last 11 non-conference games.
This is looking like a pretty evenly-matched game and should be one of the more exciting and competitive matchups of college football’s opening week. The last time these teams met was back in 2017, where Wake took a 46-10 win, however this Aggies team should be able to come out of the gate strong with Andersen at the helm.
I expect this to be a close one and I’m probably staying away, but ultimately I think Wake can eke out a cover, likely thanks to a late score. I’m going Deacons here.
