The Iowa State Cyclones travel to Morgantown, W.V. to take on the West Virginia Mountaineers at Milan Puskar Stadium on Saturday in Big 12 Conference action.
This is a very interesting matchup of two Big 12 teams still dreaming of a conference title. Both teams have just one loss in conference, and while West Virginia has looked down despite its 4-1 overall record, the narrow 42-31 against Texas last week gives West Virginia hopes that a resurgence might be around the corner.
Let’s also not forget that the game is in Morgantown. Forget about point spreads -- since 2003, West Virginia has an 83-25 (76.8 percent) record at Milan Puskar Stadium, but has only covered five times in 17 attempts in the same time frame as a home underdog. Iowa State really doesn’t have enough stats as a road favorite to consider, but since 2014, the Cyclones are 4-2 against the spread (ATS) as an away favorite.
Iowa State is just 3-2, but the two losses were against in-state rival Iowa (ranked No. 19 at the time of the game) by a single point, as well as a two-point loss to still-undefeated and nationally-ranked Baylor. The Cyclones hold a triple OT win over Northern Iowa, then looked much more impressive with a 72-20 win over Louisiana-Monroe and was stunning in last week’s 49-24 victory against TCU.
West Virginia fans are going to hang their hats on the fact that last week’s game against Texas was close and that the game is in Morgantown. Milan Puskar Stadium will be rocking, but can the Mountaineers get up again for another game? This will be a fun one to watch, but Iowa State is looking to roll and West Virginia will be a big bump in the road, but not enough to slow down the Cyclones enough to cover.
