India 1.03 Afghanistan 15.00
India take on Afghanistan in Southampton on Saturday with the two teams sitting at opposite ends of the table. India are unbeaten at the tournament so far, with 7 points from their opening 4 matches. On the other hand, Afghanistan are the only team without a single point to their name and sit rock bottom of the table.
Afghanistan were hammered by England in their last match. They lost by 150 runs at Old Trafford; the largest winning margin of the tournament so far. Despite registering their highest World Cup score yet (247/8), they fell well short of England’s total and were comprehensively beaten.
Rashid Khan now has some unwanted records to his name after he was smashed all over the park by the relentless England batsmen. He figures were the most expensive ever recorded in a World Cup match, with 0-119 from 9 overs. He also conceded the most sixes in an ODI match after 11 maximums were scored from his deliveries.
Khan, The 20-year-old, who has already achieved so much for his country, looked out of his depth against England. He is the number 1 ranked T20 bowler and ranks number 3 in ODIs but is yet to have been able to help his side pick up a point at this year’s World Cup.
On the other hand, India have been flawless so far. They have been scoring runs for fun and their batsmen will no doubt be licking their lips after the recent Afghanistan bowling performance. In their last match, Rohit Sharma scored a sublime 140 from just 113 deliveries to smash his team to victory against arch rivals Pakistan. That was Sharma’s second century of the tournament. He scored 122 against South Africa in India’s opening match and also scored a half century against Australia. He is proving to be one of the stars of the competition.
India are in a strong position to qualify for the semi-finals after winning three of their four matches. They have beaten South Africa, Australia and Pakistan so far and only missed out on a 100% record after their match with New Zealand was abandoned due to rain. It is highly likely that they will secure yet another win against Afghanistan on Saturday.
Afghanistan will take confidence from the fact that they lasted all 50 overs against England in their previous match. It was by far their best batting display of the competition and if they had performed similarly in some of their previous matches, they probably would have picked up a win. Hashmatullah Shahidi top scored with 76 whilst Rahmat Shah Asghar Afghan also chipped in with scores in the 40s.
India will be without star batsmen Shikhar Dhawan for the remainder of the tournament after he fractured his thumb. They have an extremely strong squad and will hope they can continue their fine form without Dhawan.
India certainly won’t need Dhawan against Afghanistan. This could be one of the biggest wins of the tournament when these two teams meet at The Ageas Bowl.
