In the 2019 ICC World Cup, Bangladesh will play against Sri Lanka at the Bristol County Ground.
Sri Lanka’s previous fixture against Pakistan was abandoned due to rain which means that the team is on 3 points after 3 games. It has been a relatively poor tournament for Sri Lanka but the team has been doing enough to stay alive and winning this match will place them in a decent position. The biggest issue for Sri Lanka has been their batting. Kusal Perera and Dimuth Karunaratne have shown promise but the remaining batsmen have been very poor. Angelo Mathew and Kusal Mendis have been the major disappointments as they were expected to lead the batting but have scored only 2 runs between them. This tournament favors the teams that bat well and it will be important for Sri Lanka to post a decent total if they are to compete against Bangladesh. While the batting has been poor, Sri Lanka showed that they have quality bowling as the likes of Lasith Malinga and Nuwan Pradeep bowled the team to a victory against Afghanistan. If the batting can get its act together, Sri Lanka have the bowling to compete.
Bangladesh started the tournament well but following their win against South Africa, the team has lost 2 successive games. In their previous match, Bangladesh were beaten by England. It was a poor bowling effort by Bangladesh as they conceded 386 runs in 50 overs. The likes of Shakib Al Hasan and Mustafizur Rahman were very expensive and the team failed to take wickets during the middle overs. The Sri Lankan batting is much weaker than England’s but Bangladesh must bowl with more accuracy. The total posted by England was always too much for Bangladesh but the team batted well as they scored 280 runs with Shakib Al Hasan (121) and Mushfiqur Rahim (44) making solid contributions.
The Bristol County Ground has a very flat wicket and the boundaries are extremely short. Short boundaries and a flat pitch should ensure that both Sri Lanka and Bangladesh have the opportunity to score big runs.
Sri Lanka showed great determination during their match against Afghanistan but I see them returning to losing ways. The Sri Lankan batting is extremely weak and the team has failed to score a total over 200 in this tournament. Bangladesh, in comparison, have a very solid batting unit as they scored over 300 against South Africa. Both teams can bowl well but only Bangladesh has the batting. This advantage in batting ability should make the difference in this match.
