England and Australia will play the third Ashes Test match at Headingley in Leeds. Australia currently leads the series 1-0.
The previous match of the series ended in a draw due to bad weather which caused almost 2 days worth of cricket to be missed. That being said, the match managed to progress into the final innings with England looking significantly stronger. Australia were only 4 wickets away from defeat when stumps were called on the final day.
The big news from the Australian team is that Steve Smith will be unavailable for this match. Smith was struck by a sickening blow from Jofra Archer who bowled a bouncer at over 90 mph. Archer caused big problems for the Australian batsman and it seems like his spell at Steve Smith has changed the momentum in this series. Without Steve Smith, Australia look weak in the batting as the likes of Warner, Bancroft, and Head all look in poor form.
England have issues with their top-order as key batsmen like Jason Roy and Joe Root look in poor form. Fortunately for England, the middle-order looks in top form with Jonny Bairstow, Jos Buttler, and Ben Stokes all getting runs at Lord’s. Stokes looked especially impressive as he scored an incredible century in the second innings. With the team scoring some runs, England will feel that they have the bowling to win this match.
This match is being played at Headingley which means the seam bowlers should enjoy the game. Headingley will assist seam bowlers as there is usually grass on the pitch. The overhead conditions in Leeds should also assist the swing bowlers.
Taking everything into consideration, I am going to pick England to win this match. England looked the better team at Lord’s and they will be high on confidence following that performance. Australia, in comparison, look very weak without Steve Smith and I see them struggling to score enough runs to compete. England have the momentum and I see them winning this match and leveling the series.
