West Indies vs. England
Friday, June 14, 2019 at 4:30 AM (Rose Bowl)
England -300 / West Indies +240
England play against the West Indies at the Rose Bowl in Southampton. Both England and the West Indies have played 3 games and are in decent positions to make it deep into the tournament.
The West Indies played against South Africa on Monday in a match which lasted 8 overs before the rain arrived and the match was abandoned. The result means that the West Indies have 3 points and are in a very solid position. The West Indies won their opening fixture as they defeated Pakistan but was unluckily defeated by Australia in their second fixture. The big news surrounding the West Indies side will be related to the fitness of Andre Russell. Russell was unfit for the match against South Africa but the team will be hoping that he regains fitness and is available for this contest. Russell brings power with the bat and pace with the ball. Both assets are huge for the West Indies.
Looking on the other side of the pitch, England are 2-1 after 3 matches. England have beaten South Africa and Bangladesh but were beaten by Pakistan in their second outing. England’s previous match was against Bangladesh which was a match that the team won by 106 runs. Jason Roy was outstanding with the bat as he scored 153 runs off only 121 balls. Jos Buttler(64) and Jonny Bairstow(51) also contributed with runs as both batsmen scored half-centuries. The bowling was led by Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer. Both Stokes and Archer took 3 wickets each and they were vital in ensuring Bangladesh never gained momentum in their inning. England’s only concern will be Adil Rashid’s form. Rashid has been vital over the past 18 months for England but the leg spinner looks terribly out of form. In the 3 matches, Adil Rashid has only taken 2 wickets and has gone at an economy rate of 6.2 runs per over. Rashid must improve in this match as it will be the only way England can contain the powerful middle order of the West Indies.
The Rose Bowl is usually good batting pitch. That being said, the boundaries are large meaning the spin bowlers could be effective. That means that Adil Rashid will be vital for England. The India vs South Africa match at this venue suggested that the pace bowler have some assistance so both England and the West Indies will be encouraged by that.
England and the West Indies played in a 5-match ODI series a few months ago. It was a close series that ended 2-2. Chris Gayle was outstanding during that series as he scored 424 runs in 4 innings. England must stop Gayle early or they could concede a huge total.
This has all the characteristics of a very close match. Both England and the West Indies are playing tremendous cricket and they looked very evenly matched when they played in the Caribbean earlier in the year. This is a tough match to pick but I am going to side with the West Indies. The West Indies are bowling very well and I see the likes of Oshane Thomas and Sheldon Cottrell causing England some problems. England struggled against Oshane Thomas in the ODI series earlier in the year and I see him having the edge over the England batsmen in this match also. I see the bowling making the difference with the West Indies getting the 2 points.
