India and South Africa are set to play each other in a 3-match Test series. The first Test match will be played at the ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam.
India last played Test cricket in the West Indies were they won the series 2-0. Ajinkya Rahane and Hanuma Vihari were the two top batsmen for India as they combined to score over 450 runs in the 2 matches. The bowling was led by Jasprit Bumrah who will not be playing in this series due to a back injury. That being said, Ashwin is expected to return to the side so the team should have enough bowling depth to cover Bumrah’s absence. The big change made for India is the inclusion of Rohit Sharma as an opener. Rohit has an outstanding record in ODI and T20 cricket but he has lacked runs in Test cricket and this seems like the perfect chance for the player to secure a spot in the team. India will be big favorites as they enter this match and the team should be full of confidence considering their recent results.
On the other side of the coin, South Africa lost their last Test series 2-0 at home against Sri Lanka. It was a very disappointing result with the batting lacking runs. The likes of Faf du Plessis and Quinton de Kock must play well in this series if South Africa wish to score enough runs and compete. The South Africa bowling should be strong with the likes of Ngidi and Rabada but the conditions may not suit their style of cricket. This is expected to be a tough series for South Africa as they are the weaker side and the conditions are not to their liking.
The pitch at the ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium is expected to be very dry. Batting early in the match may be easy but the ball is expected to turn for the 3rd day onwards.
Taking everything into consideration, I am going to pick India to win this match. India are significantly stronger than South Africa in all conditions but with the pitch expected to turn, there may be a big gap between the teams. I see India winning this fixture with some ease.
