India 1.40 Pakistan 3.00
India will play Pakistan at Old Trafford on Sunday in one of the fiercest rivalries in world cricket. India have 5 points from their opening 3 matches whilst Pakistan have only managed 3 points from their first 4 matches.
India’s last match was abandoned due to rain. They were due to face fellow tournament front runners New Zealand in Nottingham on Thursday but both teams were awarded a point each without a ball being bowled.
In Pakistan’s last match, David Warner’s century fired Australia to victory and condemned Pakistan to their second loss at this year’s World Cup. Their previous match against Sri Lanka was also disrupted by the wretched English weather and was eventually called off.
One positive that Pakistan can take from the loss against Australia was the bowling of Mohammad Amir. He is now the tournament’s leading wicket taker with 10 wickets. The paceman claimed figures of 5/30 from his 10 overs and was a serious threat with the ball throughout.
With India’s batsmen in supreme form, Amir must be at his best again if his side are to trouble the number 2 ranked ODI team.
Rohit Sharma is amongst the tournament’s highest run scorers with 179 runs to his name so far. Shikhar Dhawan has also impressed and smashed 117 from 109 against Australia earlier in the competition. If these two get going on Sunday, Pakistan will have great difficulty stopping them.
India’s bowlers have been fantastic so far in England. Pakistan were bowled out for 105 after just 21.4 overs against the West Indies in their opening match and if they’re not careful a similar sort of score could be on the cards against India.
Pakistan are probably the most inconsistent team in the World Cup. They were on a dismal run of form heading into the tournament, losing 4-0 in an ODI series against England just prior to the beginning of the competition.
Despite this thrashing, Pakistan miraculously beat England in their second match of the tournament. Mohammad Hafeez hit an excellent 84 runs from 62 balls and guided his team to a surprise victory over the pre-tournament favorites.
India will be wary of Pakistan’s inconsistency but will be confident of beating their arch rivals and solidifying their place in the top 4 of the table.
The treacherous weather in England has meant that a record number of World Cup matches have been called off already. There is rain forecast in Manchester on Saturday but it likely to be in spells and we should certainly get some play.
I’m backing India to beat Pakistan and claim the bragging rights in this huge match for both countries. Pakistan would love to beat their old enemies but India have too much talent in their squad. You can never be too sure of what will happen when these two sides meet however India are the firm favorites this time around.
