England are set to play South Africa in a 3-match Test series which will be a part of the World Test Championship. The opening match of the series is set to take place at SuperSport Park in Centurion.
England have struggled in Test cricket and there is increasing pressure on captain Joe Root and his team. England lost their previous Test series 1-0 away from home to New Zealand. Prior to that series, England failed to regain the Ashes as the team only managed 2-2 draw at home. The batting has been a huge issue for England and players seem to be switching places regularly. The English bowling has also looked flat at times, especially when the pitch favors batting. Big expectations have been placed on Jofra Archer as his pace is expected to be a big factor. This is expected to be a tough series for England but the team will be desperate to start on a positive note.
On the other side of the coin, South Africa have been in a rebuilding stage. South Africa were humiliated during their previous series as they lost 3-0 away from home against India. While the result was expected, the manner of the defeat was disappointing. There have been changes made in the management of the South African team and the Proteas will hope that can change their form. South Africa will feel that they have a stronger bowling unit and they will hope to utilize their home conditions well.
SuperSport Park is known to produce some of the faster pitches in world cricket. The conditions should allow big runs to be scored while giving some assistance to the fast bowlers.
Neither England nor South Africa have been playing well in recent months and that will make this match especially important. As far as predicting a winner is concerned, I am going to pick South Africa to win this match. South Africa have the advantage of playing at home and I see the conditions suiting their bowlers well. I am expecting England to compete but for South Africa to win.
