Pakistan take on Sri Lanka in the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup. Both Sri Lanka and Pakistan bounced back strongly from opening round defeats so we should see two teams that have confidence in their cricket.
Pakistan were exceptional in their previous match as they defeated England. It was a supreme effort by Pakistan that was set up by their batsmen. Mohammad Hafeez, Babar Azam and Sarfraz Ahmed all scored half-centuries which allowed the team to score a total close to 350. The bowling was also very impressive as Shadab Khan and Wahab Riaz performing extremely well. The wickets that Shadab Khan took were particularly important as he dismissed both Jason Roy and Joe Root. The win against England places Pakistan in a good position moving forward and they will be confident in their ability to win this match.
Sri Lanka, on the other hand, also won their previous match as they defeated Afghanistan. While the win was a good result, it was not the best batting display by Sri Lanka. Kusal Perera played well but the remaining batsmen were very poor as the team failed to reach the 200 mark. Angelo Mathews and Kusal Mendis were both very poor as neither player managed to score a run. With Pakistan’s strong bowling unit, it is unlikely that Sri Lanka will have the ability to post a competitive total. As far as the bowling was concerned, it was an exceptional performance by the bowlers. Lasith Malinga was terrific as the paceman took 3 wickets for 39 runs. Nuwan Pradeep was Sri Lanka’s top bowler as he took 4 wickets at an economy rate of 3.4. This will be a much tougher match for Sri Lanka as Pakistan have a much stronger team than Afghanistan.
This match between Sri Lanka and Pakistan is set to be played at the Bristol County Ground. This is expected to be a very high scoring venue as the ground is very small and the pitch is flat.
Sri Lanka will be happy with their win against Afghanistan but I see them returning to losing ways in this match. Pakistan were stunned by the West Indies in the opening round but the team has bounced back well and having beaten England, the players will be confident. Comparing these two teams, Pakistan are firing on all cylinders while Sri Lanka are only bowling well. Pakistan have a better balance and a stronger squad so I am picking them to win this match.
